Dating! The dance of romance with a twist of chance, sometimes it works and sometimes it tanks.

Whether through OK Cupid, set up by friends, finally mustering the courage to ask out your co-worker or a getting a casual phone number at the bar, dating has flavors and textures all it’s own. It’s a time when reality seems is suspended and we can see the best – and often the worst – in each other.

On Saturday, June 6th, Portland Playback Theater wants to hear your stories and explore this theme with the show: Adventures in Dating: From Nirvana to Nightmare and Every Crazy Encounter in Between! In this performance we will look at the good, the bad, the strange and the passionate about dating.

“Dating can yield a complete life change, a relationship, maybe a life-partner,” says Jackie Paris, Director of the Portland Playback Theater Troupe. “It can also bring about an awkward encounter with a complete stranger, to put it nicely. Or something in between. Either way, we want your juiciest and most outrageous dating stories. Please bring us your words as Playback Theater is all about YOUR story. Come join the community and explore this topic with artistry, safety, and respect.”

This show will invite you to share your best and worst dating stories. These stories may be intimate, funny, embarrassing, awkward, amazing or troubling.

Come join the community and explore this topic with artistry, trust, play and respect. Let’s see what can be created together! Let’s watch!

ABOUT PLAYBACK THEATRE

Playback Theater is an improvisational form of theater whereby audience members tell stories from their lives and watch them enacted on the spot by actors and musicians. Playback is a vehicle not only of personal expression, but a way to connect with the past and create a future. It is powerful and creative, allowing diverse voices to be heard and respected.

Public shows:

  • Are original – no two shows are ever the same
  • Create a comfortable forum to hear and tell personal stories
  • Honor the individual voice of the story teller
  • Build community in a creative and engaging manner
  • Are Wildly entertaining!

“It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen –part campfire stories, part drama, dance, metaphor, comedy, and improv all mixed in with an exuberant sort of ecstatic informal community therapy!”

My slogan is it’s either a good date or a good brunch story. Unfortunately, Portland has provided me with much brunch blotter. I’ve been overwhelmed by ego, listened to male monologues, been choked by boredom, and met the only Mormon DEA Agent on Tinder. It’s definitely time I see someone else’s stories played back.

I’ve had nightmares and caviar dreams. Please pick me.

I’ve had some pretty unbelievable and hysterical experiences in dating via OKCupid and would relish the opportunity to commiserate and laugh with a community of sympathetic and funny folks. I have several friends who remain active on OKCupid (I defected to eHarmony and have been quite happy with that decision) who would be only too happy to join me for what looks to be a promising evening of collaborative improvisational theater! Please award me the tickets, so I can take a fellow OKCupid alum.
