For March, the Empirical Theater presents four exceptional Japanese anime films: Spirited Away, Paprika, Summer Wars and a special late-night screening of Akira. Each film will be exhibited on the Empirical’s four-story screen in Japanese with English subtitles.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away helped redefine the possibilities of animation for American audiences and a generation of new filmmakers.  When ten-year-old Chichiro is separated from her parents while moving to a new neighborhood, she stumbles into a whimsical  dream-like world where Japanese mythology is combined with Through the Looking Glass-type whimsy. Spirited Away was the biggest box office hit of all time in Japan on its release and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature cementing Miyazaki’s reputation as an icon of inspired animation and wondrous, lyrical storytelling.

Widely considered an inspiration for the Christopher Nolan hit Inception, Paprika is a visual tour-de-force where reality and dreams collide in a kaleidoscopic mindscape of sheer surrealistic genius. When a revolutionary machine that allows scientists to enter and record a person’s dreams is stolen, a fearless detective and brilliant therapist join forces to recover the device in this gripping thriller from acclaimed director Satoshi Kon.

Mamoru Hosoda’s dazzling Summer Wars is an intriguingly intelligent sci-fi tale featuring a hallucinatory pixel parade of cool avatar designs, kung fu jackrabbits, and toothy bears. When teenage math prodigy Kenji solves a complex equation, he inadvertently puts a virtual world’s artificial intelligence in a position to destroy Earth.

Set in the post-apocalyptic city of Neo-Tokyo, the cyberpunk adventure Akira concerns a biker gang member whose exposure to a mysterious energy source and subsequent development of telekinetic powers place him at the center of a conflict that may destroy the world. Admired for its exceptional visuals, this 1988 science fiction action film is considered to have set the standard for modern anime and over the years has emerged as a cult classic.
