It’s incredible that GALACTIC has never made a carnival album yet, but now it’s here.

To make CARNIVALE ELECTRICOS, the members of GALACTIC (Ben Ellman, harps and horns; Robert Mercurio, bass; Stanton Moore, drums and percussion; Jeff Raines, guitar; Rich Vogel, keyboards) draw on the skills, stamina, and funk they deploy in the all-night party of their annual Lundi Gras show that goes till sunrise and leads sleeplessly into Mardi Gras day.

GALACTIC was formed eighteen years ago in New Orleans, and they cut their teeth playing the biggest party in America: Mardi Gras, when the town shuts down entirely to celebrate. CARNIVALE ELECTRICOS is beyond a party record. It’s a carnival record that evokes the electric atmosphere of a whole city – make that, whole cities – vibrating together all on the same day, from New Orleans all down the hemisphere to the mighty megacarnivals of Brazil. Armed with a slew of carnival-ready guests-including Cyril and Ivan Neville, Mystikal, Mannie Fresh, Moyseis Marques, Casa Samba, the KIPP Renaissance High School Marching Band, and Al “Carnival Time” Johnson (who remakes his all-time hit)-GALACTIC whisks the listener around the neighborhoods to feel the Mardi Gras moment in all its variety of flavors.

Kung Fu
Proud to be firmly installed in the new-funk movement, KUNG FU is quickly popularizing their unique sonic contribution, blurring the line between intense electro-fusion, and blistering dance arrangements. Making fusion music “cool” again, the band draws on influences such as early Headhunters and Weather Report, and merges those ideas with a contemporary EDM informed sensibility. Imagine 70’s funk-fusion meets a modern dance party!

Although the ensemble cast enjoys a seasoned pedigree that reads like a late-night summer festival all-star jam, this fledgling “nu-sion” project is growing a unique and rabid following by commanding audiences at theaters, clubs, and major national festivals, all within the past 18 months.

?Kung Fu features Tim Palmieri (guitar), Robert Somerville (tenor sax), Todd Stoops (keyboards), Chris DeAngelis (bass guitar), and Adrian Tramontano (drums/percussion). The powerhouse quintet’s live show has been described by critics and fans alike as “lethal funk”, “explosive”, “jaw dropping”, and “musically mesmerizing”. For the uninitiated, the experience is typically shocking yet the focus is simple:

Please, please, please choose me for the free tickets!! Stanton Moore is my absolute favorite drummer – seen him lots with Galactic both in New Orleans and elsewhere – but never in my new state of OR.
Mardi Gras is my favorite holiday, and I was unable to celebrate this year, since I had an early work day on Wednesday.
This would soooo make up for it! Choose me!! Choose me!!

Just got divorced and could go for a night of fun out on the town! Galactic is one of my favorite bands and would love the chance to see them live in Portland.

KungFU and GALACTIC!! i had pizza w Galactic in Chicago, they love me and would be so disappointed if i was not given free tickets to the Portland show. Also – i am student of kungfu and unless i get free tickets to the Portland show the band will have to wait another year before i can show them the newest most explosive secret kungfu move of them all! –> the electric shred guitar finger tips face melt. so, you see, you have to pick me.

I’ve never seen either band, and the galactic band seems to be quite popular. Would like to see what they’re all about.

Would love to have an evening of live music after a day full of art, as the 11th annual SE Area Art Walk will be taking place both Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 5 each day. A true Portland event where people turn their homes into pop-up galleries to exhibit art. Free, fun and funky—what MORE could you want?!? Come to 3370 SE Brooklyn St. and check it out!

Please choose me. My wife and I saw them on jamcruise for our honeymoon 9 years ago, and haven’t been able to see them since! This would make our anniversary!

  15. Steve B February 26, 2015 at 2:58 pm #

Finally, Tim Palmieri makes it out here! Throw in one of my favorite tenor saxophonists (Rob Somerville) as well as Galactic, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for FUNK.

  16. Amanda February 26, 2015 at 3:13 pm #

Wish I just had the money to pay my way because these guys deserve it! Unless I win tickets, this will be my first time missing Galatic in Portland. The fact that they are playing the Crystal Ballroom again just adds to the injury… Man, this show is gonna be AWESOME! Of course, if I DO win, I’ll be sure to spend the few funds I have left on good tips at the bar. Cheers! :-D

Giggidy, giggidy…. I’m so excited to see that PDX Pipeline is giving away a chance for Galactic tickets! Caught them at Blue Fest a few years back and have been wanting to catch them in a more intimate venue ever since. And just my luck….I’m totally free that night.

  24. Tom W February 26, 2015 at 10:36 pm #

Sounds like a fun live show. I’d like to go!

  25. Erika February 27, 2015 at 2:59 pm #

Need to put my dancing shoes on and show my husband what Portland, what America is all about!!! My husband just moved to Pdx from South Africa and is yet to attend a live show! He’s bummed with the cold and rain…so I think if I could warm him up on the dance floor with some super jammin’ tunes he might change his mind about our city!!!!

  26. Marcie February 27, 2015 at 5:09 pm #

Last time I saw Galactic at the Ballroom I had a great time and bought t shirts for my kids. Now I want a t shirt for myself!
