From their days playing together as teenagers to their current acoustic and electric blues, probably no one has more consistently led American music for the last 50 years — yes! — than Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, the founders and continuing core members of Hot Tuna.

The pair began playing together while growing up in the Washington D.C. area, where Jack’s father was a dentist and Jorma’s father a State Department official. Four years younger, Jack continued in junior high, then high school — while playing professional gigs as lead guitarist at night before he was old enough to drive — while Jorma (who had played rhythm guitar to Jack’s lead) started college in Ohio, accompanied his family overseas, then returned to college, this time in California.

Along the way, Jorma became enamored of, then committed to, the finger-picking guitar style exemplified by the now-legendary Rev. Gary Davis. Jack, meanwhile, had taken an interest in the electric bass, at the time a controversial instrument in blues, jazz, and folk circles.

In the mid 1960s, Jorma was asked to audition to play guitar for a new band that was forming in San Francisco. Though an acoustic player at heart, he grew interested in the electronic gadgetry that was beginning to make an appearance in the popular music scene — particularly in a primitive processor brought to the audition by a fellow named Ken Kesey — and decided to join that band; soon thereafter he summoned his young friend from Washington, who now played the bass.

Thus was created the unique (then and now) sound that was The Jefferson Airplane. Jorma even contributed the band’s name, drawn from a nickname a friend had for the blues-playing Jorma. Jack’s experience as a lead guitarist led to a style of bass playing which took the instrument far beyond its traditional role.

While in The Jefferson Airplane, putting together the soundtrack of the 60s, the pair remained loyal to the blues, jazz, bluegrass, and folk influences of the small clubs and larger venues they had learned from years before. While in San Francisco and even in hotel rooms on the road, they would play together and worked up a set of songs that they would often play at clubs in the Bay Area and while on the road, often after having played a set with the Airplane. This led to a record contract; in fact, they had an album recorded before they decided to name their band Hot Tuna. With it they launched on an odyssey which has itself continued for more than 35 years, always finding new and interesting turns in its path forward.

The first thing an early Hot Tuna fans discovered at their concerts of the early 1970s was that the band was growing louder and louder. In an era in which volume often overtrumped musicianship, Hot Tuna provided both. The second thing a fan would discover was that Jack and Jorma really loved to play. “Look around for another band that plays uninterrupted three- to six-hour sets,” wrote reviewer Jerry Moore. What Moore could not have known was that had there been no audience at all, they would have played just as long and just as well, so devoted were they to making music. Of course, the audience wasn’t superfluous by any means; it energized and continues to energize their performances. Album followed album — more than two dozen in all, not counting solo efforts, side projects, and appearances on the albums of other bands and performers — and they continued to develop their interests and styles, both together and in individual pursuits. In an era in which old bands reunite for one last tour, Hot Tuna can’t because Hot Tuna never broke up.

Jorma and Jack certainly could not have imagined, let alone predicted, where playing would take them. It’s been a long and fascinating road to numerous exciting destinations. Two things have never changed: They still love to play as much as they did as kids in Washington D.C., and there are still many, many exciting miles yet to travel on their musical odyssey.

Nostalgia! It would serve to unite my husband and I in our younger days, bring back memories. This is 2014 and it is great to see these bands still surviving and keeping the music alive, we are glad to be alive and will be there to see them perform LIVE and that, in itself is exciting. We not only will be celebrating another year with Hot Tuna, but the struggles of life and living will be well
realized at this concert, for sure. You see my husband is so lucky to be alive as he had just underwent a very serious surgery, heart valve replacement surgery and being at the Alladin on New Years Eve to celebrate his life and another Year with Hot Tuna will trully be a blessing and memorable.

    • Kathy L. Rankin November 6, 2014 at 3:44 pm #

I would personally like to tell Hot Tuna that My husband and I are attending this great show because PDX Pipeline supports live music in Portland OR and does a great job of making sure that we know about what is going on in the area by posting shows, events, and keeping us updated. It is a great way to learn of bands playing here and without this exposure, how would people know where to buy tickets? PDZ Pipeline does a great job and I would tell them that at the show. Of course, I will dance too.

      • Kathy L. Rankin November 6, 2014 at 3:52 pm #

Its pdx pipeline and I made a whoops above. autocorrect is not set up here! But you know, for sure, I will tell Jorma that PDX PIPELINE ROCKS bigtime and sends people to shows in Portland OR and around the area…He will be impressed more than ever and that I appreciate it. So Pick my husband and I, please.

        • Kathy Rankin November 9, 2014 at 12:51 pm #

Ok, I have posted several times now.

We moved here with no family or friends, and our jobs fell thru so now we are unemployed. We would love to be able to do something fun in our new city that otherwise we would never be able to do. Christmas is going to be rough with our lack of money/family/friends here, so a nice New Years would help keep us in good spirits :)

  40. Steve November 17, 2014 at 11:44 pm #

Last year, my girlfriend and I went to see fireworks being shot off the Space Needle in Seattle. It was so cold that night, that the smoke generated from each firework consumed the Space Needle in a thick cloud of smoke almost making it impossible to see the colors and designs of the fireworks. Poor Seattle. The piro team did an amazing job as always, unfortunately the weather was the culprit. So this year, I want to treat my girlfriend to a New Years celebration in Portland. We will get wild and crazy. Please let me win this. Thanks.

  41. Peter November 18, 2014 at 9:03 am #

Hot Tuna? Who doesn’t like hot tuna? I’m a single 5th grade teacher with no family. The holidays are really hard for me because I don’t have family to spend it with. I get invited to friends houses but there’s a sadness that stirs inside me every holiday missing my family and wishing I had blood relatives to share this time with. If I won these tickets I could empower myself by inviting a friend to join ME to celebrate something during this time and not always be the one that gets the pitty invite. I need this and want this.

  54. Dana G. November 21, 2014 at 9:37 am #

Perhaps I wont be a cold fish this New Years, if I get into the HotTuna show.

  55. Alex November 23, 2014 at 9:00 pm #

What a treat it would be to tap in to the timeless and share a live moment.
    Music can do that.

This would mean a LOT! When I was young in a juvenile home in the mid 70’s, I would listed to Hot F*kin’ Tuna all the time, they took me away from my miserable life. I saw them several times over the years, including a dinner theatre in NJ. A couple years ago, I talked with Jorma and told him that there’s a lot of fans out here, and that he and Jack should get outta NY for a few and come out here. Well,he listened, and this is the second time they’ve come out here since then… the ironic part is, for the first time in 16 years, my daughter will be away for the holidays and I can actually go out for once (I’m a single dad and awaiting approval for disability), but I simply can’t afford to buy tickets…. Sigh… :(

  85. sandy Leavens December 6, 2014 at 10:54 pm #

My Daddy played in a band and use to play Hot Tuna on the Record player and my Mom use to dance in the living room :) I would love to see them in person as I have lots of fun memories of them :)

  86. Lucy December 7, 2014 at 7:59 pm #

I would love to win tickets to start off this year right. I have just left a tumultuous relationship and am looking forward to ringing in the new year with style and good night!

  87. Denis Mortenson December 10, 2014 at 2:41 pm #

I lived in San Francisco once upon a time. I used to drive a car with Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship eight-track-tapes littering the back seat. Those were wild days. In Eugene I saw the Further Bus in every Eugene Celebration. It was wild, man. Where are my green brownies? I’m forgetting everything nowadays. Don’t be like me. Remember to send my tickets, man! Be wild! More wild than pine beetle grubs eating Ken Kesey’s pines. I am looking for another Long, Strange, Trip. So please pick me. I an ASCAP songwriter. Once I pitched a song in Nashville. There were two other music dudes with me. The dude said, “Hey, dude, slide your CD over here. What track?” And the dude listened to my song for maybe ten seconds. That was it. The music business can be brutal, dude. It’s not That 70’s Show, man. Nope. That these guys or any musicians can make it through a week let alone fifty years of making music, well it makes me believe in milangro bean fields. Make my miracle come true – send me those far out tickets!!

Or I’ll be the next dude to Fly Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

  88. Alex December 10, 2014 at 10:29 pm #

I’ve never been to the Alladin theater yet so I’d like to check that one off my list. I also don’t have any solid plans for new years so this would be an awesome event to go to!

I don’t really enjoy tuna, and especially in a casserole, but, when you pair the two and call
them Hot Tuna, I salivate to see them. A total fan of a Jefferson Airplane Spinoff, I’d live to
    win. Please pick me.

The love of my life and I are coming out to Portland from Souther California. We would love to attend the event to bring in the new years with a bang. We haven’t attended any New Years eve party in the past and celebrating the new years in a different city and doing something we haven’t done before would be amazing! Also, she has this beautiful dress that I want her to flaunt!

My husband and I are long-time fans of Jack and Jorma. Love that they love coming to Portland and especially to the Aladdin. Would love to kick 2014 to the curb as it has been a rough personal and financial struggle again this year. Haven’t been able to see them for several years. Would love to usher in 2015 with Hot Tuna and all of its great fans in hopes of a brighter and better year. Thank you also PDX Pipeline for this great offer, we would love to be winners.

  121. Dave Gilroy December 23, 2014 at 10:19 pm #

I have been educating my musical son about the artists of my time and he has come to love them and knows music so well. We have been sharing Hot Tuna electric and acoustic but have yet to see them live. I promised him we would not realizing tix we be so much but even worse…being so broke right now. We want to get ot for a Mew Years Eve for once. Tired of sitting home and being able to see some of the finest musicians ever would make this a very memorable New Years that we were able to share. Wow! I’m in the Way Back Machine. It was 1971 or 72. I was in college in upstate NY. Both gave concerts during that time. Hot Tuna performed on stage and Jefferson Air plane performed in the field house. The field house concert was a real trip!

Haven’t stopped listing to the great music that came from this era It would be such a “trip” to hear these guys perform again! Thanks!

  136. Tim Calderwood December 30, 2014 at 11:05 am #

My wife and I have not had a New Years date since before we got married 8 plus years ago. I was going to take her to the Oregon garden, but as most know, money is tight, so my hope is to win some tickets instead to treat her to a night she has long sense deserved. Maybe a few jokes will help?

What do you call a fish that needs help with his or her vocals? Autotuna
What is the difference between a piano and a fish? You can tune a piano but you cannot tuna fish
