The 13th Annual Northwest String Summit (NWSS) returns to Horning’s Hideout (North Plains, OR) with the finest acoustic pickers and standout electric bands from July 17 – 21, 2014. Located just 20 miles outside of Portland, OR, Horning’s Hideout stands as one of the most scenic festival sites in the country; NWSS is the only music offering this year taking place at Horning’s Hideout.

A family-friendly and locally-sourced festival, NWSS caps its capacity at 4,500 attendees to ensure an intimate experience for all festival-goers at an incredible ticket price. For more detailed information, please visit: www.stringsummit.com.

The 13th Annual Northwest String Summit is hosted by Colorado-based Yonder Mountain String Band; arguably the top touring neo-bluegrass band in the world. Yonder will perform three nights of music, and additional standout acts at this year’s festival include Sam Bush Band, Railroad Earth, The Wood Brothers, Steep Canyon Rangers, Greensky Bluegrass, The Infamous Stringdusters, Danny Barnes, Shook Twins, Wicked Messenger (Feat. Adam Aijala & Ben Kaufmann), Jeff Austin and The Here & Now, Dave Johnston’s Banjo Strummit, Fruition, Darol Anger, Dead Winter Carpenters, Grant Farm, Lil Smokies, Blackberry Bushes, Scott Law w/ Sam Grisman, Tyler Grant, & Andy Thorn, Scott Law Bluegrass Dimension, Burle and the No Brainers, Allie Kral & Friends, Burle w/ Travis Book & Anders Beck, The Student Loan, The Rumpke Mountain Boys, Gipsy Moon, Pete Kartsounes, and Sugarcane. The Motet will also perform a late-night main stage set on Saturday, July 19, 2014.

Northwest String Summit partners with singular Portland organizations, food vendors and emerging Pacific Northwest-based musicians as a way to support the various thriving local communities. Celebrated Eugene, OR favorite Ninkasi Brewing Company will offer exceptional craft beers onsite for the third year-in-a-row, including an exclusive small-batch NW String Summit Festival Specialty Brew called Clusterpluck Session Ale. Made with Northwest Pale Ale and Honey malts, Clusterpluck is a light and refreshing golden ale — the perfect accompaniment to a summertime jam session. Ninkasi will host the Northwest Local “Ninkasi Brewing” Stage @ Cascadia Acoustic Coffeehouse.

String Summit event promoter Skye McDonald comments about the forthcoming festival, “This year we are going into our 13th String Summit and we are delighted to refocus our programming on strings and acoustic music, the foundation of the festival. While there is plenty of pickin’ and singin’ at this year’s Strummit, when the clock strikes midnight, there are surprises in store that will ensure a huge rockin’ dance party that is sure to get the trees shaking and the peacocks howlin’ along with the crowd!”

This year, the infamous Further bus turns 50 years old, and for the third year-in-a-row, the current incarnation of the bus will be onsite at NWSS, along with bus owner Zane Kesey (son of Ken Kesey). Celebrate the 50th road trip to the 1964 New York World’s Fair with special intimate sets featuring select festival performers at the Further bus.

The following artisan food trucks will provide delicious food options for festival-goers: Bunk Sandwiches, Toast, Thai Volcano Express, Solarshots, and others TBA. Northwest Local “Ninkasi Brewing” Stage @ Cascadia Acoustic Coffeehouse will serve a variety of non-alcoholic beverages, baked goods, and snacks from local favorites such as Trailhead Coffee and Voodoo Doughnuts. Festival sponsors EcoProducts and Klean Kanteen are both on board helping reduce the overall carbon footprint of String Summit by providing reusable, compostable and recyclable cups and other tablewares and goods.

Now in its 11th year, the Band Competition at Northwest String Summit reigns in some of the hottest pickers from all across the country. The competition is in line with other top festival competitions, such as Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Rockygrass, and will occur on Friday, July 18, 2014. Four bands/musicians will be chosen by a panel of judges including members of Yonder Mountain String Band and festival staffers to compete for the winning crown (each band will perform for 10 – 15 minutes). The winner is awarded an opening slot on Sunday, July 20, 2014, and a paid slot at the following year’s festival. The Band Competition is a single mic only set-up, and only acoustic instruments are allowed (no DIs, no drums). Applications can be submitted until April 18, 2014; for more information please see www.stringsummit.com/band-competition-2.

I am dying to attend! Pretty, pretty pleeeease!

  39. Andrew May 22, 2014 at 3:18 pm #

Assuming this is a seperate contest than the last NWSS one on here since there is currently a low number of entries. In any case, must go to NWSS as it’s one of the best festivals that Oregon gets (and we don’t get many up in the NW). This year’s lineup is great, can’t wait for Railroad Earth and Sam Bush! Pro-tip: Horning’s security has been checking wheel wells for beer/liquor ;)

  40. Nikki May 22, 2014 at 3:20 pm #

    Music is life!!!

  41. Denise May 22, 2014 at 3:35 pm #

  43. Mark robarge May 22, 2014 at 3:47 pm #

I’d love to win a pass this year. I’ve been to every NWSS since 2001. It’s absolutely my favorite summer festival. That festival NSFW me a musician. It’s not to be missed

    • Mark robarge May 22, 2014 at 3:50 pm #

NWSS made me a musician *

  44. Chad May 22, 2014 at 3:54 pm #

  45. Nathan G May 22, 2014 at 3:56 pm #

Let’s just be honest with ourselves, who wouldn’t want to go to something as awesome as this?

I wanna go but I wanna go for free even more

  47. Candace May 22, 2014 at 4:08 pm #

I would LOVE this!! Since being diagnosed with heart failure (at age 30) and having a pacemaker implanted, I am severely limited in seeing indoor shows. This does not dampen my love of music though! My soul survives on outdoor shows. Help a sista out :) Peace & Light!

  48. Zoe May 22, 2014 at 4:18 pm #

I’m so glad there’s a second chance – I’ve never been to NW String Summit and I know it’s going to be a blast!!!! I’ll dress up, dance, and have an awesome time with a great friend!!

  49. Kasey May 22, 2014 at 4:21 pm #

NWSS has been on my bucket list for awhile now and would love to finally get to join our group of friends who have annually attended this festival. I met the love of my life through live music and fell in love with him attending festivals and concerts across the country. When we married last year we knew that live music had to play a central role as we build our social calendar around what live music is playing around town. This summer as my husband and I celebrate our one-year anniversary on July 13 it would be awesome to be able to surprise him with NWSS tickets!

  50. Sara Goldman May 22, 2014 at 4:23 pm #

Some friends keep encouraging us to attend this event, but we can’t afford it. We love music and would love to go. Pick me! Also- it’s my birthday this weekend!

I grew up in the south selling corn at bluegrass festivals with my folks…I’ve got bluegrass in my soul! That said, in the almost nine years that I’ve lived in Portland, I’ve never been to Sting Summit or Horning’s Hideout! I’m a student and a yoga teacher…so unfortunately, the only way that I’ll go this year is with a free ticket! Thanks Pdx Pipeline!!

  77. ND May 23, 2014 at 9:48 am #

    YES! Pretty please.

  78. Heather May 23, 2014 at 10:13 am #

It’s phamily affair! Great venue, music and company. How can you go wrong?

  79. Ron T May 23, 2014 at 10:24 am #

Like music to my ears. This would be a rewarding opportunity, as, it’s been a washboard
of time since I’ve been away from the city. Pick me and I’ll make these 4 days a memory

I would love to go the the String Summit – especially to hear the Sam Bush Band, Steep Canyon Rangers, and the Infamous Stringdusters!

  86. Les Hutchinson May 23, 2014 at 1:05 pm #

Hi, Les here. You may remember my last entry into the String Summit Sweepstakes. Well, things have taken a turn for the weird. Last week I beseeched your cool free ticket dispensers to approve a covert op pass to get to the bottom of this so-called ‘summit’ of an elite group of string instrumentalists convening (or is it…COVENING) at some woodsy Hideout in the middle of the night? WTF are these people up to? What are they hiding? Many of the local musician’s community are mortified by this development. Something needs to be done to monitor these cultural phillistines, and that something is sending me and an equally alarmed citizen to this bash and hopefully save the planet. Again, thanks in advance for your attention to this matter.

  87. Jessica May 23, 2014 at 1:26 pm #

NWSS is so much fun for families! Pick mine, please!

  88. Lindsey May 23, 2014 at 4:34 pm #

    Favorite festival of the year!

  89. Sara May 23, 2014 at 6:07 pm #

We used to go to this every year! My oldest son is no longer free and we can’t afford 3 tickets :(. We would LOVE to go again! I love everything about the summit! The music, of course! But the venue is amazing, the family atmosphere, the food vendors, the sense of community… It’s absolutely amazing!

  90. Heather l May 23, 2014 at 6:12 pm #

String summit is my favorite festival. I have worked it the past 5 years and would love to take a year off :)

  91. David May 23, 2014 at 7:58 pm #

I have never been but have heard amazing things. I only recently woke up to the wonder that is this genre of music. I love my hippie music festivals so let’s make this happen! Please!

  92. Jamie Lyn May 23, 2014 at 9:26 pm #

Hornings Hideout holds a special, magical place in my heart! I worked food booths here for years and have attended many shows at this amazing venue. Unfortunately, every year it gets harder to come up with the money & get the time off work. I’m determined to go this year, hang my hammock in the trees, stare at the stars, see the beautiful peacocks in the forest, dance to endless amazing music, reconnect with friends, share good vibes and spread the musical love!! You’re picking someone on my birthday, that would be the BEST present ever!!!!

  93. Jenelle Taylor May 23, 2014 at 10:54 pm #

Now that OR allows me to marry, maybe I can ask the love of life to tie the knot with me at this strings concert.

  94. Aaron Pelman May 23, 2014 at 11:18 pm #

    Hey y’all!

Just moved here and I need a good homemade music festival. I grew up in North Carolina, and some sweet bluegrass would sure make me feel at home…

    Enjoy the show!

  95. Willie May 24, 2014 at 2:06 am #

    YES PLEASE.

  96. Kendall May 24, 2014 at 8:44 am #

Hornings hideout is home! I’m broke from school and have pretty much had no social life because of it , and NWSS is definitely the only festival I would be devastated to miss. I would be sooo grateful :)

I’ve always been tantalized by the magic of peacocks and banjos. Never been to the fairly palace they call Hornings. I look at my mans hologram peacock cheese posters and can only dream of the fun. :)

  98. Alyson May 24, 2014 at 10:46 am #

Yayuh! NWSS is what I look forward to every year. There is no time or place where I am as happy as I am there. My husband and I have gone every year since we moved to Portland and I won’t be missing it any time soon. I would have volunteered with my husband but I’m currently working 6 to 7 days a week so I can get the go ahead for some summer fun! I’ll be there no matter what but a little help goes an astronomically long way when you’re workin two jobs so your hubby can finish college. I need a recharge on some of that family style/peacockin/livin/lovin/laughin good times. Thanks for bein the bees knees, NWSS.

  99. Jessica A. May 24, 2014 at 2:17 pm #

  102. Jessica VanDerslice May 24, 2014 at 5:29 pm #

    I would be so honored to win these tickets. It has been several years since I could attend a festival, as I now have a child. As a single mother, it’s not something I can afford. I would love the opportunity to show my River Sage the amazing people in this community, the incredible music showcased here, and the giving nature of those in the scene. I am a HUGE string music/bluegrass/Yonder lover and this show would be the experience of a lifetime! Thanks for the opportunity! Always Grateful(~):}

  108. Beth van Elswyk May 25, 2014 at 2:57 pm #

Been going to the festival for a few years with my PA college buddy and our gals. In fact I introduced my partner to the scene through this festival and its the only one we hit. My buddy and his wife had to cancel this year due to his fathers failing health, and we missed out on buying tickets because of unemployment and a family medical issue in her family. I would love to show her what a “miracle” is, and this year we both could use one. Grateful for the chance to win, hoping for a “yonder miracle”! Namaste

  109. Carrie May 25, 2014 at 3:53 pm #

Hello!! I recently got a group of people together to all pitch in and buy our wonderful friend a ticket whose birthday is during string summit. She goes every year, but financially couldn’t do it this year and we made her ticket happen! I can’t afford a ticket of my own, and have never been, but would love to go celebrate with her and all the wonderful strummiters! :)

  112. Lynne May 25, 2014 at 5:38 pm #

My husband and I would love to celebrate our 25th Anniversary at the NWSS Festival. I would love to surprise him. For the past two decades he has entertained so many people in our back yard, including an Open House every Friday. He has created an oasis yard with music including playlist for every event and a fire pit, hot tub and great food. Please, help me give something back to him. Thankyou!!

  121. tina schumacher May 26, 2014 at 1:51 pm #

  128. Nicole Crawford May 27, 2014 at 12:16 am #

I have lived in Portland for about 4 years now and have always been in college. Since I have taken summer classes, I have never been able to attend the summit. I graduate in June with my bachelor’s degree in mathematics! But I can’t afford to pay to go to the summit and would love tickets to go.

  129. Eleanor May 27, 2014 at 4:58 am #

This would be the ultimate vacation for my boyfriend and I. Hornings has been on our bucket list for years and who better to see than our favorite bluegrass bands?!? Love the people, love the scene, and can’t wait to take in the beauty of Hornings one day!

  130. Ashley Lunde May 27, 2014 at 8:58 am #

I have been going most years since the very first year of strummit and it is a wonderful reunion where friends from all over come back to see eachother and boogie in my favorite place! But sadly this may be the first time I am not able to afford it unless I win tix…

  131. Jesse May 27, 2014 at 8:59 am #

  133. Hannah & OJ May 27, 2014 at 11:53 am #

I’d love to go to the String Summit since my partner and I are moving to Portland TOMORROW and have never been the the Pacific NW before! This would be the best way to meet our new home amongst our favorite bands, but as a grad student and camp counselor, we definitely can’t throw down the money ourselves. This weekend is also our anniversary, and there’s no better way to celebrate than to dance all weekend. Hope you can help us out!

  134. sara salfeld May 27, 2014 at 12:03 pm #

I have recently moved to eugene and have heard the magical stories of nwss and hornings hideout! Im a virgin to nwss and would be so grateful to get to experience this beauty with amazing souls and nature surrounding me!!

I can’t compete with everyone’s reasons for why they should be picked! Too bad we all can’t make it. The “Welcome Home” vibe is why I love visiting Horning’s for NWSS. Good luck, everyone! :)

  141. Barry May 28, 2014 at 7:45 am #

I’m trying to win these tickets for my sister’s birthday — NWSS is the highlight of her year and would love to give these to her.

  144. Melissa Guldenzopf May 28, 2014 at 11:38 am #

So I just moved to Eugene or all the way from NY the second week in may this year with a good friend. Music festivals were my life on the east coast and have already missed two of my favorites. I would love this to be my first taste of a west coast festie!

  145. Kimberly May 28, 2014 at 3:36 pm #

This festival represents the beauty, love & community that Oregon is. I’ve had the opportunity to work a few of them and my eyes opened to a world of love & creativity that I had never personally experienced to that extent. The days of music, color & good people filled my vibe for months after! I had no words to tell people what it’s like, it’s an experience. I would love to treat my husband to this weekend. One love

  146. Maggie Jo May 28, 2014 at 4:27 pm #

I went to strummit the last 2 years. First time I was pregnant and now my 1 1/2 year old is old enough to dance and enjoy the festival experience so please give my little family a chance to have some fun at the Strummit!

  147. Tawny Mick May 28, 2014 at 4:52 pm #

I’ve never been to a costal festival and toss seems beautiful and fun. Would be charming if it were my first!

  148. Lauren May 28, 2014 at 7:26 pm #

  149. Annie May 28, 2014 at 7:48 pm #

  150. Estela Guevara May 28, 2014 at 11:16 pm #

I would love to win tickets to the magical forest. This year has been especially hard for my bf, and I would love for us to be able to share some much needed fun time at hornings hideout, especially since it was where we shared our first festival together. We are Bluegrass junkies.

  151. Erin May 29, 2014 at 7:21 am #

Ooh, hope I win these! Money is tight this year and it would really help out a lot…

  152. Austin Palda May 29, 2014 at 9:20 am #

I’ve been short on cash this year and making it out to Horning’s for this wonderful gathering is at the top of my list. I’ve been going every year since I moved out to OR and do not want to miss this year.

  153. Joahna May 29, 2014 at 9:48 am #

I have never been to this festival and dream of attending. I was raised listening to bluegrass with my great grandparents in Florida, where they would travel from one bluegrass festival to another, and sometimes we’d get to join them. The thought of going to the beautiful Oregon woods and strumming my guitar beside my tent, and then watching these amazing bands play would be a fantasy come to life. <3

  177. Rachel Stokes May 29, 2014 at 9:59 pm #

  195. Katididdle May 31, 2014 at 10:17 am #

In order to know why String Summit rules, look no further than the Peacocks’ jewels
Or Bob riding around on his golf cart, ensuring that everyone’s cool, and having a great start
to the best festival of the summer, smiles all around- couldn’t be *funner!
And the music, sweet music, rising like a balloon, carrying us with it- straight up to the moon!

Yonder, Stringdusters, Railroad earth, Greensky–I’m so excited, I just might cry!
Wood brothers, Sam Bush, shook twins, fruition–oh my god, am I itchin’
to get myself straight to hornings, all my favorite bands performing!
The best lineup yet, I just have to get, without going into debt, to where I can sweat,
to dueling banjo duets, fingers dancing on frets, and where by musical magic we are all beset!!!!

Getting to this festival would make my summer. And I really need to perfect my peacock call… Thanks!!

    * cuz you know, it rhymes…kind of ; )

  196. Michelle Campbell May 31, 2014 at 12:45 pm #

We go to NWSS every year! This year, we have our first baby on the way and have to start pinching pennies a bit better. We’d still LOVE to go though, and it could be baby’s first festival (still in the belly)!

  197. Austin Baranko May 31, 2014 at 9:52 pm #

I would love the opportunity to go!
As a student, it can prove difficult to scrape up the change to make it to an event like string summit! Between the venue and the lineup, string summit could be the best fest in the west!

  198. Dorothy June 1, 2014 at 9:10 am #

I will wear my ruby slippers and. Hold the power to dance a jig for days. Hope I make the grade.

YES YES YES!!! I would love to go to the Hideout!

  209. Isa July 16, 2014 at 8:44 am #

I was just teasing about this festival yesterday – that it’s nit about making money and the organizers keep the numbers down and that it’s one of the last great festivals that are keeping it old school. All that made me really want to go because I avoid three mega festivals and would love to experience something so Oregon and so down home. I’d take my sister.

  210. John July 16, 2014 at 11:13 am #

I would like to win. Thank you!

  211. Jessica August 16, 2014 at 11:49 pm #
