Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon will host its ninth annual Power of the Purse event on March 14th at the Hilton Portland. The gala will bring together women and men from all across the Portland metro area to celebrate and raise money for the strong, smart and bold women of Portland. This year, fourteen remarkably innovative Portland women will represent the purse-o-nalities of this year’s Power of the Purse. Each purse-o-nality will be paired with a local purse designer to create a truly unique fashion statement. With the help of a member of the Girls Inc. Girls Leadership Council, the power trio will create a purse that not only is a work of art but also tells a story of female tenacity and strength.

This year’s purse-o-natilities include Oregon’s first female Attorney General – Ellen Rosenblum, Portland Thorns Player – Mana Shim, the CEO of Ruby Receptionists – Jill Nelson, a world travelling Delta Pilot-Jen Peri and 9 more truly remarkable local women. Local designers from Christina Castillo Handbags, Hand and Hide, Mo&CO, Ellington Handbags and more will bring the purse-o-nality’s and Girls Inc. girls’ inspiration to life.

Power of the Purse will feature an auction of these one of a kind handbags modeled by Girls Inc. girls with additional silent auction items including vacations, epicurean adventures, local design work and much more. The night will also include shopping with some of Portland’s favorite boutiques, a wine wall, and dinner. Individual Unreserved Tickets are $175 and Double Date Package (4 reserved seats) are $1000 for the gala. Access to the Boutique shopping, cocktails, and appetizers prior to the event is $40. Ticket sales start Monday, January 27 and can be purchased online at or by calling (503) 230-0054. All proceeds of Power of the Purse benefit the programs and mission of Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon, which includes after-school programs that mentor and teach girls the social, financial and leadership skills they need to take control of their lives and grow into successful adults.

This year’s Power of the Purse gala will be a true Portland event bringing the creativity, design, innovation, and local spirit to life in a night benefitting strong, smart, and bold young women of the Northwest.

I have a 12 year old daughter, who is the girliest of girls to my tree-climbing tomboy. For years, I couldn’t figure out how that happened. I bought her gender neutral toys and banned pink from the household to make her a feminist. However, she has helped me realize that strong women and girls come in all shapes and size, from all walks of life, and wearing and playing with whatever they please. I believe my daughter will cure cancer or win the Nobel Prize, all while wearing stilettos and glitter eye shadow. But no matter what she does or what she wears, I will be always be proud of her.
