Portland-by-way-of-Eugene, Oregon trio Floater deliver their best album to date with “Wake,” their eighth studio album. Writing more sophisticated, well-crafted songs with each release, “Wake” (Typhon Records) delivers a twelve-track collection of melodic, pop-laden psychedelic guitar-rock decked out in chunky guitar riffs, primal drumming, and soaring vocals.

Consisting of front man/bassist Rob Wynia, guitarist Dave Amador, and drummer Pete Cornett, Floater’s Northwest roots are rich and firmly planted, helping to account for the fact that they are one of the region’s top-drawing acts, and continue to draw new crowds in each of their developing markets.

However, their strong roots are only a partial reason for their fan base. You need more than just luck. You need a constantly evolving sound that is both truly your own and always exciting to the tried and true and newcomers alike. And that is what “Wake” offers new and old fans.

“It would be very difficult for the same three guys to not be Floater somehow,” says front man Rob Wynia, discussing the similarities and differences of Floater’s previous releases with ‘Wake.’ “I’d say it’s still Floater by definition, since we’re Floater. It’s different in that we really prefer to make every album its own thing. I think this, as a collection, it has a lot more high-energy songs and feels more ‘live’ than previous work. So much live performance has really geared us toward that kind of sound and feel.”

Touring the songs extensively before recording them helped the band choose which songs would comprise “Wake.” It also helped strengthen and energize the songs, as they had time to live and breath on the stage before being put to tape.

#82 of the Crystal Ballroom’s “100 Nights”
Portland’s Crystal Ballroom, as an ongoing entertainment staple for the city since 1914, celebrates its 100th birthday with a 100-day-long party! From October 14, 2013 to its actual centennial-mark on January 21, 2014, daily events will tumble forth from the historic Crystal Ballroom and its second-floor space Lola’s Room, with an occasional spotlight pointed at the affable setting of Ringlers Pub.

Events will feature a mix of current national acts, the return of longtime Portland favorites, showcases of up-and-comers, and themed events inspired by key eras of the Crystal past. While the series will end with a bang – a performance by the Decemberists’ Colin Meloy on January 21 – the entire run of shows will be stacked with stellar talent. Additional events will pay tribute to the Crystal’s amazing history, with ballroom dance extravaganzas, old-timey/Americana dances, a gypsy-themed event, soul/funk shows and psychedelic jams.

I have not seen them since I moved to Portland, and getting the tickets free would free up my wallet to buy their CDs again (ex roomie stole all my autographs, which included them).

I will be honest. My wife and I have seen Floater around 100 times, in every venue in this city and around the Northwest. Amazing band, excellent sound and they continue to improve over the years. That being said, we totally blew our checking account for New Year’s Eve and completely forgot about this show tomorrow night…hence, we have no funds and I’m here asking for tickets.

Love Floater. This show will be great. Thanks for the chance to attend, PDX Pipeline.

It’s ridicously geeky how much I love Floater and how many times I’ve crammed into the Crystal Ballroom to enjoy their epic sets. I’m recovering from the holidays though and my finances are null right now. I’d be the most grateful fan to win tickets!

In fact, if I don’t win then this’ll be one of my first Floater shows at the Ballroom missed since 1999… Oops. :-(

So the only time i saw Floater was when they were first starting out, and they played a venue called Killer Whale in Newport. I was bicycling the foggy streets, and their thronking music permeated the murk, so i had to get to the source. Will their show at the Crystal have the same magic? Would love toi take my oldest friend with to find out. That’ll blow his mind
