Portland Revels is pleased to welcome Eric Stern as guest artist for the 2013 Christmas Revels show, “Christmas in Old Europe.” Stern is the Northwest’s own premiere operatic tenor, accordionist, pianist, Trained in the United States and Europe, he has performed internationally, garnering critical acclaim for his voice, musicianship and his stunningly imaginative songwriting.

In this special pre-Christmas Revels concert, Mr. Stern will provide a wonderful introduction to the hauntingly beautiful music of Eastern Europe, in an intimate setting at the elegant University Club of Portland.

With vocal and accordion music (and a couple of special guests) Stern will introduce his audience to some of his favorite music from Eastern Europe, with emphasis on his own expertise

Here’s a word from Eric himself:
Hello, this is Eric! I’ve been thinking lately of my grandmother Rosetta Stern. She used to sing me songs from the Jewish theater and she had a friend, a professor of archaeology who would joke with her about her name as in “the Rosetta Stone” (this was before the internet when people had to work long hours hand-crafting their own jokes).

(On FRIDAY) I will be providing the Rosetta Stone for some of my favorite Balkan Music at the University Club of Portland and I wanted to invite you! Have you always wondered about those balkan ornaments? The odd meters? Or have you just enjoyed Roma (gypsy), music, Bulgarian and Klezmer as I have, and want a little more insight into their secrets, the scales, the cultural context, and the history? Sound boring? OH NOOOOO, it’s not as I and my good friend Paul Evans, as well as bassist Peter Whitlist will be playing our ASSES off (sorry grandma), heating up the room, and just think you’ll be learning at the same time. It will be like a Richard Feynman lecture with incredible music. It’s all being produced by the Portland Revels …

I’ve heard this man play and sing, and he is INCREDIBLE. Plus, he’s got a mischevious sense of humor…I think this concert is going to be extraordinarily entertaining!

    erik’s music
    evokes memories
    of of circle dancing
    with Mrs Sperber
at the temple where I grew up
    and
my time listening to gypsies play on the platform of the subway
    in the Czech republic
and the summer I spent in Albania
    needless to say,
i’m a BIG fan of erik’s balkan music!

This sounds amazing, and I’d be absolutely love to be able to go! I love Balkan music, and could definitely use some cheering up, as my family is all far away.

Because I am bored to tears by carols written in English, and because the Balkans generally RULE.

I saw this event last night when looking for Christmas happenings to which I can bring my two friends who are eighty years of age. They love music and this is perfect. If I can get tickets – I can afford to take the three of us.

    Thank You
