Karen Lovely’s “Spirits of Prohibition HALLOWEEN Party” at Jimmy Mak’s, Saturday October 26th! Huzzah! Flappers & Fellas, if you know your onions, you’ll bust out your glad rags and ankle down to the best juice joint and frolic pad in town for a night of smoking hot jazz & blues from the 1920s & 30s. Special guests: The Bathtub Gin Serenaders, Robbie Laws and Mary Flower.

Prizes for Best Costume! Come as your favorite flapper, gangster or bootlegger. To help get your groove on, Jimmy Mak’s will be serving up some classic prohibition libations…sip on a Bees Knees, Harlem Cocktail, Sidecar or Luigi.

“There’s two kinds of people in this town, bootleggers and customers.”

While “Empress of the Blues,” Bessie Smith was blazing musical trails across the North, South and Midwest, “Prohibition Rose” reigned queen over bootlegging activities in Portland. Shanghai City was infamous during prohibition times for its night life, underground city, and smuggling of booze and people. “Wet” did not refer to the rain.

KAREN LOVELY – Always backed by a stellar band, this powerhouse vocalist delivers a blistering mix of contemporary & old school blues. Lovely’s standout performances have garnered awards, critical acclaim and standing ovations at festivals and venues throughout the US, Canada and Europe.

Prohibition band includes Devin Phillips on sax, Carlton Jackson on drums, Doug Bundy on clarinet, Tyler Smith on bass, Pat McDougall on piano, plus special guests Robbie Laws, Mary Flower, and The Bathtub Gin Serenaders with Ila Selene on vocals, Melissa Orr on violin and vocals, Stephany Smith Pearson on accordion, mandolin and vocals, Eric Von Radics on guitar and vocals, Lawrence Newcomb on clarinet and saxophone, David Orr on ukulele bass, Chris Matthews on drums and Chari Weatherford on washboard.

“…an unstoppable force blasting out of the Northwest.” – Frank John-Hadley, DOWNBEAT

“…stunningly soulful. Absolutely one of the standout artists of the past few years at the Waterfront Blues Festival.” – Peter Dammann, Artistic Director, Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival

“Karen’s got a killer voice, amazing stage presence and completely enraptures her audience. She’s brilliant.” – Valerie Ing-Miller, JEFFERSON PUBLIC RADIO

My wife and I just moved here and are trying to get ourselves to try new things and live the life we’ve always wanted. This sounds like something we would love.

We really, really want to go out that night! We have no kids for the night, cool 1920’s costumes, but a tiny tiny budget. I have only been to Jimmy Mak’s once and it was awesome. Would love to check it out again. You would make a girls year!

Jimmy Mak’s + Karen Lovely + Prohibition Blues + Halloween… The fun doesn’t get much better than this. Hmmm… I wonder where she’ll be singing this Christmas?

My great-grandmother grew up in the Prohibition era and always dreamed that she’d have a grand-daughter who loved to dance & wear flapper dresses. This show would be the closest I have come to letting her know that I still love the Prohibition era.

Yes 2 free tickets would be a great price! It would be the first time for a win,,For every prohibition you create, you also create an underground.

My spirits are high as this will be a rare Saturday / Halloween-weekend night without a gig so I’m ready to hang out and enjoy a good party. I think I’ll go as Bob Dylan.

Can’t wait to don by best 20s fancy dress (that’s costume here in the states).
The hair, the pearls, the long (fake) cigarettes.
And bring on the sultry vocals, can’t wait.

  19. Lindsay October 25, 2013 at 12:58 pm #

Can’t wait to kick up my heels and toast the American dream, 1920s style. I don’t need much of an excuse to bust out the flapper garb — I have a new feather headpiece that I scored from an estate sale just for the occasion.

  20. Kim McClain October 25, 2013 at 1:40 pm #

I would love to see Karen! She’s such an awesome person!

  21. Mathew Trono October 25, 2013 at 3:01 pm #

I really need an excuse to practice my jazz hands
