An eclectic mix of more than 15,000 beer lovers, music fans and supporters of sustainable living annually come together the last weekend of June to “Drink Organic, Save the Planet, One Beer at a Time” at the North American Organic Brewers Festival. This year, they’ll have an extra day to celebrate, as the 9th annual event will take place June 27th through 30th at Overlook Park in North Portland, marking a first-time expansion to four days. Event hours are Noon to 9pm Thursday through Saturday and Noon to 5pm Sunday.

Admission into the event is free. The purchase of a $6 reusable, compostable cornstarch cup is required for tasting beer, as are tokens, which sell for $1 apiece. A full cup of beer or cider costs four tokens and a four-ounce taste costs one token; select beers cost double tokens. Patrons receive a $1 discount toward the tasting glass with a validated Tri-Met ticket, a ticket from the Hopworks Bike Corral or three cans of food for the Oregon Food Bank (limit one discount per person). The NAOBF benefits the Overlook Neighborhood and the Oregon Food Bank.

Designed to raise awareness about organic beer and sustainable living, the NAOBF typically serves up more than 50 organic beers and ciders from 40 different breweries. The breweries do not have to be certified organic, or even produce organic beers for their pub; many of the breweries represented at the festival choose to brew a one-off just for the event. Styles run the gamut from Belgian Whites to Cascadian Darks, offering something for every palate. There’s also live local music, organic food, sustainability-oriented vendors and non-profits, a soda garden with complimentary Crater Lake Root Beer for minors and designated drivers, and a children’s area with face painting and activities. The NAOBF is a family friendly event, and minors are welcome with parents.

The NAOBF is known as the most earth-friendly beer festival on the planet. Festival attendees sample beer from reusable and compostable cornstarch cups made from domestically grown corn by a zero-waste, solar-powered company. Electricity needs are met with a combination of biodiesel and solar generators. Volunteers receive organic cotton t-shirts (returning volunteers can wear past T shirts and get extra tokens instead). Food vendors are required to use compostable cutlery and plates and employ sustainable practices, and onsite composting and recycling stations are provided for festival waste and are supervised by recycling czars. The event typically keeps at least 90% of the more than 2,000 pounds of waste generated from going into the landfill.

Why an organic beer festival? Studies show that the world’s population currently consumes 30% more natural resources than the Earth’s ecosystems can replenish. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, commercial agriculture is accountable for 70% of the pollution in our country’s rivers and streams. Genetically modified ingredients can be found in nearly every grocery store. The NAOBF believes that education and exposure lead to awareness, and awareness can translate to passion. If everyone becomes passionate about sustainability, as a whole we can make the planet a cleaner and healthier place for all of us to inhabit. For more information visit

This is my favorite beer festival of the whole year! Great beer, lots of space and the lines never seem to be very long!

  2. Roger June 17, 2013 at 3:13 pm #

Love the sound of this one. Great beer AND great sustainability!! Would love to win one of these packages, please.

  3. Garrett June 17, 2013 at 3:13 pm #

It’s genuinely the best beer festival in town in terms of open space, food, beer quality, and location…Very well organized compared to the long lines at the International and the Waterfront shove fest. It’s the only one I attend every year and it would be awesome to have the first couple for free…Thanks for the consideration.

  4. Sian June 17, 2013 at 3:15 pm #

I want to win a festival pass please. Went to the first Lents International Market of the year and tried a beer by Captured by Porches Brewing company. Really good beer and I see they are at this festival too. With all the laws around selling and buying we couldn’t fill our growler but here we’d get to sample it again. It really good stuff!!

Pick me! This is going to be another lame one like all the other people post. I’ve tried many a times to come up with something creative, and I’ve never won! Maybe if I play the opposite game it will work. Holla! I love my beer, and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate. Who needs a reason to drink? I don’t!

  32. Russ Golobic June 17, 2013 at 4:36 pm #

I have friends who are driving up from the Bay Area for this. Sure would be great to impress them with an awesome package!! (*that’s what she said*)

Also, I am not your typical beer drinker.
    My youtube channel is “uppitybeersnob”.

My motto: Growlers of Adam for all!

  33. Yule June 17, 2013 at 4:47 pm #

Many of my favorite things combined here!

  34. Evan June 17, 2013 at 4:50 pm #

Organic beer brings the connoisseurs here.
Our soil is rich, and our water is crystal clear.
With the sun in the sky, many a farmer wants to try…
To grow the best organic barley, wheat, and malted rye.
(Plus we get our amazing brewer’s yeast nearby.)

Once a year some of us Oregon loggers and joggers like to brew lagers…
And enjoy them at a festival where we forget to drink enough water.
But it’s OK, we still have an amazing couple of days.
The music, friends, and views give us lots of reasons to stay.
(Heck, our city even has a freakin’ bicycle valet.)

  35. Tyler June 17, 2013 at 5:01 pm #

This sounds like a great event, I would love to go!

  36. Kirsten June 17, 2013 at 5:07 pm #

  68. Jeannine June 18, 2013 at 11:10 am #

I love the whole concept behind this brewfest. There’s a strong focus on sustainability AND really good beer. It’s the “feel good” brewfest and who can’t get down with that?!

  69. Melony Beaird June 18, 2013 at 11:10 am #

We have family in town and they have never been to this beer festival. We would love to show off Portland’s best fest!

  70. Sunshine Spikes June 18, 2013 at 11:17 am #

My husband and I went to this festival 2 years ago when we returned to the Portland area after being gone for 6 years. What a great way to be welcomed back home! Our 8th anniversary is June 26th and this would be a perfect way to celebrate. Great beer for the hubby and great cider for me!

  71. Andrea June 18, 2013 at 11:19 am #

NAOBF is my favorite beer fest! They’ve done a great job in planning this festival. I love the location at Overlook Park. Lots of room to grab your beer and move out of the lines, and sit and chillax. Great way to officially kick of summer and beer fest season!

  72. Austin Southard June 18, 2013 at 11:23 am #

I LOVE this festival! Some of the best beers are poured here, and more than anything, this is where I met the woman of my dreams! We always come here for our anniversary!

  73. BrianG June 18, 2013 at 11:25 am #

Have missed this excellent fest 2 years in a row, after going every year since it was at the Forestry Center! Don’t want to miss it 3x! A little help? :)

  74. Janet June 18, 2013 at 11:28 am #

I am a home brewer and love to try new things. I have never brewed an all organic brew but would love to do so. Winning tickets and finding a few special brews will inspire me to save the planet and go organic one home beer at a time.

  75. shane June 18, 2013 at 11:28 am #

Because it’s the only organic beer fest in the country! Duh!

  76. Jen June 18, 2013 at 11:29 am #

This is my favorite Oregon Beer Festival! The beer selection is amazing, the venue fabulous, very well organized, great music and food. Going anyway but would love to be picked to go for free!! Thank you!!!!

  77. Monte Costa June 18, 2013 at 11:32 am #

Yep, this Fest is by far my favorite. It’s the one where I first tried the Acai Berry wheat from Eel River. By some dumb fluke I manged to miss the event last year. I’m determined to make up for it this time around.

  78. Anthony Aguirre June 18, 2013 at 11:38 am #

This is one of the very few beer festivals that i have not been to. 5 out of the last 6 years i have been out of town or camping.
The 1 time i made it as far as the front entrance until my grilfriend realized that she left her drivers license home. :(
She kindly offered to wait outside while i went in to try a few beers but declined her offer. This time I determined to try again
with her and both our IDs. :)

  79. Alex Stevenson June 18, 2013 at 11:51 am #

Nothing beats the views at this brewfest. I can’t ever get enough of the City, the people and the fantastic taphandles at NAOBF. In my opinion, this is Portland’s best summer beer festival with the best, most environmentally responsible beer there is in existence. The variety of brewers, styles and recipes shows every side of Portland’s passion for beer. Whether or not I get in for free, I will enjoy these beers and the brewfest!

  80. Melanie June 18, 2013 at 11:52 am #

NOAB is the absolute best beerfest in town. Wide open space, music, great variety of beer, good food, and perfect location! I love this beerfest!!!

“The NAOBF believes that education and exposure lead to awareness, and awareness can translate to passion. If everyone becomes passionate about sustainability, as a whole we can make the planet a cleaner and healthier place for all of us to inhabit.”

There’s no better place to be educated!!!
I love practicing and learning about sustainability, all while drinking beer. I have volunteered pouring at this festival for the past several years and now just want to enjoy it! Pick me, pick me please!

  90. Ken Schmidt June 18, 2013 at 12:43 pm #

It’s my favorite beer fest of the year. All I need is a cup, tokens, blanket, friends & sun for a great day at the North American Organic Beer Fest.

  91. Kathy June 18, 2013 at 12:44 pm #

I am an avid supporter of beer artisans, and volunteer and attend as many events as I am able for the opportunity to taste the newest offerings and mingle with like-minded like-minded beer lovers. I have never had a chance to attend the Organic festival yet.

  92. Kevin June 18, 2013 at 12:44 pm #

It’s like my Christmas! Love it! Walking distance from my house.

  94. Sean June 18, 2013 at 12:48 pm #

I want to attend because this is by far the best festival in Portland during the summer! The smaller crowds, the access to mass transit, the quality foods, and the quality people make this festival a much more attractive experience than the ones at the waterfront…

  95. Brandi June 18, 2013 at 12:54 pm #

    I <3 beer & festivals :)

  96. Patrick June 18, 2013 at 1:02 pm #

  124. Michelle Warnke June 20, 2013 at 9:58 am #

I would love to win because I am already planning to go, but more importantly my boyfriend has NEVER BEEN TO A BEER FEST and he has lived in Portland for almost 10 years. What the heck is that about?! it is time to show this boy what he has been missing! The Organic Brewfest is my fave of the summer fests!!!

  126. Ash June 20, 2013 at 12:09 pm #

  132. Sam June 20, 2013 at 2:27 pm #

This is hands down, my favorite beer fest in Portland. Overlook is a beautiful park. Great selection of beers. Best of all, it is very spread out and not as cramped as other fests. Can’t wait to get out in the sun (fingers crossed) and kick off the best month of the year to live in PDX.

  133. Alethea Smartt June 20, 2013 at 2:29 pm #

Six family members are visiting from the east coast next week. I’m sure I’ll need more than a few beers by the time they leave! :)

  134. Blair June 20, 2013 at 2:30 pm #

I love drinking beer outside and with names like Spruce Budd, Green Elephant and Nelson the Spacefish how could I not attend and guzzle some of this delicious brew…… Also the tree is pretty epic, coolest tree in Portland? I need to see it again.

  135. Abrha June 20, 2013 at 2:31 pm #

I can remember my first portland beer festival. I had just moved here last year from Boston and I decided to see how Portland beer differed from the specialty pints out East. It was held at this huge park that had a beautiful view. I danced for what seemed like hours in the pouring rain while drinking hibiscus beer with my roommate. I can tell you that I fell in love with this city right then and there. Cant wait to go again this year.

  136. Bill Stewart June 20, 2013 at 2:31 pm #

    Mmmmm . . . Beeeeerrrr

  137. Ophelia June 20, 2013 at 2:32 pm #

As a North American, I think it’s imperative that I be at this festival to represent organic beer…obviously.

  138. Bryan June 20, 2013 at 2:33 pm #

This is by far my favorite beer fest. Such a great location and amazing beers. I’ve been waiting in anticipation since last year’s NAOBF!

  145. Tara June 20, 2013 at 2:41 pm #

Working for the maltster we see product go out and invoices process but we’re not part of the group that gets invited to these festivals, it’d be nice to meet up with the people behind the beer and ensure our malt is being used to it’s full potential. ;) Thanks for the opportunity!

  220. Sara June 21, 2013 at 3:25 pm #

I would love to go with my husband! We have a 2 1/2 year old daughter and we haven’t been able to fit beer festivals into our schedule like we used to, especially since we don’t have any family in town. This would be a great excuse to bite the bullet, hire a babysitter, and have a date night for once.

The most “earth friendly beer festival on the planet” sounds great, especially since my husband is an Audubon Society of Portland employee who’s committed to saving the planet!

  221. Amy June 21, 2013 at 3:40 pm #

Crazy lot of comments on this one. Portland loves their beer!! I do too. I would love to attend and try some new brews.

  242. Lara June 25, 2013 at 1:45 pm #

Why would I like to attend? I just moved to Portland, I love beer and I think this is the perfect way to not only enjoy the beer but to also learn about Oregon breweries!!! I sleep on a mattress on the floor and have very few worldly possessions; and as yet, I do not have any friends and do not have anything to do… Help a girl out with some beer!!!

  243. Sean G. June 27, 2013 at 11:54 am #

So long as the beer is vegan, I’d love to go!

  244. Alex June 27, 2013 at 1:47 pm #

I’d love to win passes to this! I love craft beer and this is my very favorite beer festival in Portland, bonus points for it being stumbling distance from my house!

  245. James B. June 27, 2013 at 1:48 pm #

I went to this with friends last year, and we had a blast despite the non-stop rain. I had a lemongrass beer that tasted like Thai food in a bottle. I’m hoping someone can top that this year.

  246. Joe Drury June 27, 2013 at 1:51 pm #

The North American Organic Beer Festival has long been a favorite in our household. The primary reason behind this is the overwhelming family friendliness of the event. Sure, other Beer Festivals allow kids. But only the NAOBF has created an atmosphere that our toddler can actually enjoy. Our family would love to attend!

  247. Kris June 27, 2013 at 1:53 pm #

I not only love beer, (what Portlander doesn’t?) but I brew as well and this would be a great opportunity to learn about organic brewing!

  248. Brian June 27, 2013 at 2:00 pm #

I’m meeting my future father in law on Saturday and I think this would be a great way to get to know the guy. I’d love to win so I can take him there, have some beers and get off to a good start.

  249. Andrew June 27, 2013 at 2:16 pm #

Overlook Park is such a beautiful venue for this event.
My wife and I had our wedding right down the road at the Overlook House and absolutely love the quaint little neighborhood and this park. That, and, well, we love beer. Really been meaning to try out more Organic beers too, so this is perfect.

  250. Christopher June 27, 2013 at 2:23 pm #

This is my second summer in the city, and this will be the first time I attend this festival. I cannot wait!! Judging from the description and the comments it’s going to be fantastic!

Go organic, or go home! :)

I have been working on my beer belly (burp). I want it to be large enough to comfortably work as a shelf for my beer drinking escapades to free up my hands to juggle. I like other beer drinkers who are conscious enough about the environment to guzzle organic beers. I must have been an iguana in another life because I like it hot. REAL hot and it is going to be furnace-like this weekend. I have been up to my elbows in alligators with nasty clients all week. I could use a break and a reward for handling them all with tact instead of slapping them silly.

    Beer me, please!

I would love to attend a Portland Beer Festival that wasn’t on the water front and overfull. I have heard that this event is amazing, yet I don’t have the funds right now. Winning something would be fantastic.

I can’t afford to go unless I win tickets. I’m a broke-ass internal medicine resident. Trust me, I could use a beer.
