As it is with many journeys, you can unexpectedly end up in a much better place than you set out for.  Such is the story of “Inside Out” – the third and newest release from the talented Portland, Oregon based trio Ellen, Gene & Jean.  With its robust mix of iconic classics from Curtis Mayfield, Van Morrison and John Hiatt, and introducing a pair of inspired and distinctive original songs, “Inside Out” can best be described as Americana Soul.

“We did not expect some of the side trips, detours, and restarts,” Ellen explains.  “Every emotion was invited to this party.  “Inside Out” is an apt description of the process we went through and we could not be happier with the results.”

Ellen, Gene & Jean is Ellen Whyte (singer, songwriter & guitarist), Gene Houck (bass & vocals) and Jean-Pierre Garau (piano, keyboards & vocals).  Highlights from “Inside Out” include Ellen’s beautiful and expressive treatment of John Hiatt’s bayou inspired “Feels like Rain”, Gene’s soulful and signature vocal & bass performances on the classic “Georgia On My Mind”, and JP’s sweeping and pastoral instrumental “This Means Something.”

The trio is celebrating their May 3rd release with a very special performance in the Cabell Center Theater on the campus of Catlin Gabel School (8825 SW Barnes Road, Portland, OR 97225). The 8pm show is a benefit for the school’s Campaign for Arts and Minds. Tickets are $10 and available online through Ticket Tomato or at the door. The Catlin Gabel Upper School Jazz Band will be performing as well.

Ellen, Gene & Jean’s previous releases “Take One” and “Season of Peace” are also available on CD Baby and as digital downloads. They’re gearing up for an active 2013 summer schedule.  For more information visit:

Such a talented trio! Haven’t been able to get out and see them perform in some time. Would be wonderful to win these passes.

LOVE love this performer – would love to see the show. I was fortunate enough to be able to get her band to perform at a Mount Tabor summer concert … been a fan ever since.

I have a friend coming up from Eugene Friday and it would be awesome to win free tickets, especially since he loves jazz and so do I. If I win I will probably have to bring my girl friend, so I’d be happy to buy the third ticket and invite a couple of other friends too. It’s all for a good cause and jazz on a Friday evening would be a wonderful way to start the weekend off on a good note!
