Dr. Lonnie Smith is an authentic Master of the Hammond B3 organ. For over five decades he has furthered the sound of Jazz Organ, created a worldwide fan-base, and revealed his musical talents on over seventy albums. Today, his name is truly synonymous with the instrument.

Jazz Times magazine recently described him as “a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a turban!” This kind of description suggests the level of complexity that he exhibits in his music and the pure amazement that it elicits. Much has been written about his music…but just who is the Dr. Lonnie Smith?

Lonnie Smith has consistently been a leading force in jazz since 1969 when critics for Downbeat magazine hailed him as ‘Top Organist of 1969.’ More recently he has been selected as ‘Organ Keyboardist of the Year’ by The Jazz Journalist Association in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Born in Buffalo, New York, Lonnie was blessed with the gift of music and gained an exposure to gospel, blues and jazz through his mother at an early age. In his teens, he went on to sing in several vocal groups including his own, “The Supremes,” formed long before Diana Ross used the name.

Returning to the Soul’d Out Music Festival now for the third year in a row, Dr Lonnie Smith exemplifies the elements of a true Soul musician and we welcome him back with open arms and ears.

I’ve seen Dr. Lonnie Smith play with the Soul’d Out Music Fest the last three years in a row. I loved seeing him last year at Mississippi Studios, and haven’t heard him play the Star! I’ll be going either way, but I could take a friend this way if I won. Thank you!

    I really want to go
    see Lonny at this show.
I’d love to take my beau,
    but funds are really low.
    If freebies do not flow,
    I’ll have to fly solo.
    Please, Pipeline help this ho!

Dr Smith is going to make my Sunday night. I hope I can still get a ticket. Hate to spend my grocery money, but a girl who has lived this long without hearing/seeing him is more than willing to lose a couple of pounds/get loopy and hunger stupy to do it. I would love to take a date, and maybe even feed him, so free tickets could make that happen.

This guy’s music is incredible. I have seen videos of him on his organ and heard wonderful things about his playing. I am ready to be blown away by his impeccable musicianship!!

I’m highly-qualified to clap my hands to finger lickin’ good soul jazz. Not as highly-qualified as Dr Lonnie is to play it, but close.

I’m embarassed to say I’ve never seen the man play.

I have only recently started listening to Doc! My boyfriend and I would be honored to go see him in person. We would even just take one ticket and you could have two winners!
