Judy Richardson never thought of selling lavender products as a career goal. In fact, it all started as a dream.

“I was sitting on my acreage in NE Portland on the Columbia Slough watching my horses when I visualized a sea of purple flowers. I didn’t know what they were, but I knew they meant something.” It wasn’t until she began exploring classes at Oregon Extension in 1995 that she saw her first lavender plant and knew, she was meant to grow and sell lavender.

For Judy, having a booth at the Saturday Market has allowed her to expand her business in ways she’d never dreamed of when she first had her “vision of purple.” The market allows her the freedom to sell a variety of products and she quickly found she had “no need to go further” with expanding her business.

Today, Judy offers more than 30 lavender products, ranging from soap to lotion to sachets to neck wraps and a lot more. The body powder, sugar scrubs, lip balm, and body balm are some of Lavender Haven’s hottest selling products, and the lavender spritz is a timeless customer favorite. “Customers tell me the lavender spritz calms them down, and misted over pillows, helps them to sleep,” says Judy.

Customer input, as well as trial and error, has changed how products are packaged and how Lavender Haven’s products are made. “As we evolve, we make new products,” says Judy. Recent changes include changing a body scrub container to be easier to open in the shower and switching the sea salt in the body polish to the smallest, finest sea salt she could find.

Even now, the secret to Judy’s success remains a bit of a mystery. She encourages would-be vendors to follow their muse, too. “I don’t know what leads me to take care of my lavender.  But from the beginning, something was there that generated that energy to keep me going.” Having raised two children, and working as a family to grow Lavender Haven is a privilege that she never stops appreciating, she says now. “I feel like I’m so lucky.”

“After all these years, people still come back. Many customers return with family members, or call out of state friends and family on their cell phones to ask them what they want from my booth. That’s…something. It feels right to me. It feels good. It makes me get out there ready to pick lavender.” -Lisa Nichols

  13. Barbara June 29, 2012 at 4:50 pm #

I am a recent arrival in Portland, coming from a very rural NC mountain village. Portland’s Saturday Market is a riot of color, scents, voices, music and life that fills me with joy and a sense of gratitude toward my new home town. It brings me back to a time when I lived in Istanbul, Turkey and shopped the weekly bazaar for produce, while soaking in the local culture. Thank you, Portland!

  14. Lisa June 29, 2012 at 4:57 pm #

As a new Portland resident, the Saturday Market is one of my favorite regular events in the city. I believe in keeping money local, supporting independent and creative citizens of this city!

  15. Jessica June 29, 2012 at 5:46 pm #

Thr Saturday Market has always been around since I was a child. I love the atmosphere and the variety of food and products. I remember when I was a kid I would put pennies on the tracks to flatten them. I still have those too. It’s amazing
how many different kinds of people you see down there. It’s so exciting every time no matter how many times you visit. I would love to win this because of those all natural dog treats that Riley my dog loves, and the all natural hade made soaps. I always find something new and exciting there. It always cheers me up :) Even if I don’t win I still have the Market. :)

  23. Susan June 30, 2012 at 8:31 pm #

  36. Geo Kryptonite July 4, 2012 at 8:32 pm #

I often wonder why Lavender is referred to as a “purple flower” yet there are no lavender flowers which go by the name of Purple.

With a $25 gift Saturday Market certificate, I’d make it rain.

  37. Danielle July 4, 2012 at 11:34 pm #

Whether by foot or street car, arriving at the Saturday market is always a treat. The smells, textures, and sounds fill my senses. A man tinkering away at his creations, a woman explaining the meaning behind her numbers, people jamming on Ukuleles. There is little more that can make me feel right at home, in Portland.

  38. tim July 5, 2012 at 1:26 pm #

Saturday market is great if for nothing more than the people watching. Combine that with great art, great food, and a beautiful location, and you have a wonderful way to spend a Saturday!

  39. Patricia July 5, 2012 at 1:51 pm #

I am sorry to have to say that I haven’t been to the Saturday Market yet, but I’d love to go! The $25 would certainly help get me there! Thanks for the offer!

The Portland Saturday Market is what i look forward to every time i visit Portland! Will be there again this weekend! Totally worth the 5hour drive from Vancouver Canada! :)

  41. karen July 5, 2012 at 2:40 pm #

Saturday Market is a “must go” on my lists of recommendations to visitors. I find creative energy, resourcefulness and spirit of the craft vendors inspires delight and conversation among passers by. One eight year old boy I know chose the Saturday Market as his birthday celebration treat, inviting two close friends, twins. The lavender story reminds me of a booth I saw there a few years ago that had lavender-filled sleeping pillows, offering firm support and fresh scent for serene sleep.

  42. Erik July 5, 2012 at 3:25 pm #

I love the saturday market, but it is very confusing because it is open sunday as well,!

  52. Mandy July 5, 2012 at 4:18 pm #

    Wow, impressive entry results!
I’m glad to see you chose to spotlight Judy in this article. Her products really are wonderful and she tends to throw in a little something extra. We bought Christmas presents from her last season and they were very well received.

But I’d like to win because the weather is getting hot and this girl needs a new, sexy sun dress!

  53. Amanda Panda July 5, 2012 at 4:22 pm #

With 25 bucks I can pickup a bottle of BBQ sauce from the Louisianan chicken dudes, buy a bubbling, cermanic bird whistle, and find that perfect sun hat. Bring on the festival season!

  54. Andrew July 5, 2012 at 4:36 pm #

It’s amazing how many more people put there names on for this (free money) compared to the number of entries for tickets you give away to concerts. I’ll put my name out there on this one because I haven’t spent a good day down at the market in a long while. It’s always some of the best people watching around.

  55. Gayleen Williams July 5, 2012 at 4:43 pm #

1 of the best things to do on a Saturday!!

  56. katie mcpherson July 5, 2012 at 4:46 pm #

  64. Justin July 5, 2012 at 5:42 pm #

I’m a native Oregonian and, although I have been unemployed for over a year and have no money, I still make a trip to Portland’s Saturday Market every week. It feels good to get out of the house, see interesting people, listen to good music and browse all the unique and different booths.
On a side note, I recently started using a lavender soap and my skin has never been happier ;-)

  65. tweetybird July 5, 2012 at 5:49 pm #

    It’s all about community!

Great to have a meeting place, gather around food, patronize local businesses with no middlepeople – where everyone gets together! Literally – especially during peak times….

    splash of color
    a beckoning of flavors
    constant motion
    a teeming of people

A community that eats together, stays together!

  74. Kelly G July 5, 2012 at 11:42 pm #

My girl friend likes Saturday Market, so if we win, it will save me a little dough when we go. Saturday Market is always fun, even one year in the snow, but we still had to go! It is a great way to spend an afternoon browsing and boy can she shop ’til she drops!

  75. Selena Johnson July 6, 2012 at 12:46 am #

I’ve never been able to buy anything at the saturday market and I feel badly. I would love to finally be able to instead of being a creepy lurker.

  76. Terry B July 6, 2012 at 1:53 am #

I think it’s a great place to buy local!

I love the Saturday market because when I moved here a few years ago from Chicago, it was one of the very personal ‘Portland’ things that seemed to separate the city from others. The vendors are great, and the people watching is even better. Admittedly I haven’t been there in a few years, but would love to go back soon… what better motivation than $25? :)

  88. Steven Heilman July 6, 2012 at 11:40 am #
