Downtown parade, Sugar Skulls and Altars, cultural music performances for Day of the Dead!

A series of fun and FREE community events!

Dia De Los Muertos celebrations in Mexico fall in the first day or two of November, but the folks at Old Town Creative have chosen the day before Halloween for their downtown parade and party, in hopes that children will use the parade as a test drive for their halloween costumes!

The festivities actually begin on the afternoon of Saturday the 29th, with an all ages community Altar Build. Altar building is a tradition in which people bring decorations and items and photographs which represent loved ones who have passed, and arrange the items in artistic installations in their memory. Altars are commonly very colorful, engaging, and full of personality. There is no cost, those who wish to build altars may show up during scheduled hours with their supplies. Tables/pedestals and supplies for altars are NOT provided and must be brought in.

On Sunday the 30th, the day begins at 11am with Sugar Skull decorating for kids! Home-made Day of the Dead folk art that you can decorate with frosting, beads, materials, anything your heart desires. Please come prepared to ASSIST AND SUPERVISE your children as they participate! This is also a free activity, supplies are provided!

Last minute altar building is also available during this time, although it is recommended to come on Saturday.

Next, the Dia De Los Muertos DOWNTOWN PARADE assembles at 2:00PM, at Pioneer Place Mall (On SW 4th Ave and Yamhill). Anyone may join us in this procession! It is ten blocks long, straight up 4th Avenue, across Burnside and over the parking lot at 3rd and Couch, ending at the Someday Lounge 125 NW 5th Avenue for an exclusive afterparty. In past years this parade has seen bejeweled hearses, stilt walkers, ghouls, mummies and zombies, bicyclists, marching bands, roaming musicians, pirates, unidentified monsters, ethnic dancers, drummers and most of all tons of children with painted faces and costumes!

The parade leads us to the Someday Lounge at 125 NW 5th Ave. where we are treated to live performances at 4pm by Los Gallos Rumba (fun/interactive Flamenco-Samba) and at 5pm by Puertotierra Soundsystem (Mariachi meets Dub Step!), while the crowd views the special altars. There will be delicious mexican food and snacks, hot chocolate, roaming puppets and more! Raffle tickets will be given to each person at the door! Stick around to win a variety of awesome donated prizes.

These are community based events and are only asking donations at the door, with no one turned away. Please join us for this colorful celebration!
