White Bird is delighted to open its Uncaged season with the return of Australia's Chunky Move and the North American premiere of Gideon Obarzanek's new work Connected on October 20-22, 2011 at Lincoln Hall, Portland State University. Based in Melbourne, Australia, Chunky Move creates thrilling genre-defying work, diverse in form and content, designed for the stage as well as for site-specific situations.

With Connected, Artistic Director/Choreographer Gideon Obarzanek is collaborating with California kinetic sculptor Reuben Margolin to create an enthralling 60-minute work where five dancers construct a sculpture in real time; simple physical connections quickly evolve into complex structures and relationships.

In addition to the three performances, Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) will host a conversation with Chunky Move's Gideon Obarzanek and sculptor Reuben Margolin on Tuesday, October 18, 12:30-1:30 PM, where the two artists will discuss the beginnings of their collaboration and the creation of Connected. Founded in 1909, PNCA (1241 NW Johnson, Portland) is a leader in innovative education programs in the visual arts and design. The presentation will take place in The Commons and is free to the public.

I would love to go see this on Thursday night. I have a friend who always dreamed of being a dancer, but threw it all away to become a microbiologist instead. I would love to take her to this show.

Dancing is my outlet for creative expression especially when my mind and body are confined to studying all week. I look for inspiration from other dancers to broaden my vocabulary when I hit the dance floors here in Portland and am curious to see this sculpture of movement! I try to make a few White Bird performances a year and would love to attend Friday night! Best of luck to all who entered.

Chunky move is always pushing the boundaries of visual entertainment and movement. I would love the opportunity to see them live. Preferably Friday night.

This will be my first White Bird show, and it just looks like such a fun time– so mind bendingly cool. I’m trying to get my sweetheart into going to more performance-type events, so I’ll be taking him as well! We will both be turned on to the fantasy! Any of the days would work fine.

  20. Stephani October 15, 2011 at 6:51 pm #

G’day mate! Chunky Move looks ace, looks like it’ll be a bottler of a show. I’d love to go with a cobber of mine (she dances, as do I), but tickets are so exy! It would be ripper if we could go on Saturday.
