With the question of a Pavement reunion having been triumphantly answered last year with an Ono-esque “YES”, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks return with their most energized set to date. Their new album, Mirror Traffic, ranges from hard-rocking political commentary (“Senator”), to touching, winsome folk (“No One Is”), to virtuosic but melancholy and contrite kiwi pop (“Stick Figures In Love”).

The lyrics are as curious as ever but more meaningful than they have been since Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. “This record,” concedes Malkmus dryly, “is relatively approachable.”

As the first producer to work with Malkmus since Pavement, Beck has drawn out a set of performances that ring with clarity and inventiveness. Gone are the long guitar workouts and jams that marked the last couple Jicks albums, replaced with a sharply defined focus and more colorful depth of field. With nearly half the tracks clocking in under three minutes, Mirror Traffic flashes by with a lightness of touch; a decision that band and producer found easy to take: “Beck & I were both burned out on the heavy rocking style,” says Malkmus, “and playing to the strengths of a melody felt like the way to go.”

Pipeline has kicked ass on the contest lately. Malkmus puts of a great show, would love to be able to go to this. First time I saw him was opening for Radiohead, next time was a great 4th of July in NYC. Glad the Crystal can do him justice.

I missed The Malkmus and gang twice already! I was even living in different cities! My ears were denied due to insufficient funds.

Help a broke student. Give me a joyous moment! A moment I can hear. A moment I can feel. A tangible sounding moment! one of love and generosity. A momentous sound you can share. A generous touch I can love…

    Well… Maybe not THAT generous… ;p

I’m just a poor Eugenian. I go to community college. Make my world a brighter more colorful place to live in…
With fat Oregon-style rainbows of sound raining down on me from Malkmus and The Jicks. With Ty Segall. Live on stage. With me squished up against it. At the Crystal Ballroom. With the love of my life by my side. :D Pretty Please.

I am coming back to Portland for a visit this week. I got moved out of my beloved city to Southren California for work and am going to squeeze every ounce of fun I can get before I am shipped back to bro centeral.

Sometimes these words are the bitter friends that come back to bite you in the rearest of ends.

I cannot even do one set of sit-ups, I’m so bourgeoisie.

  26. Jacqui October 8, 2011 at 7:58 am #

I saw Pavement play this year at Williamsburg Waterfront in NY – having just moved here I would love to see Malkmus somewhere I might actually be able to hear him.

Help me find Portland music venues so I can tell everyone in NY that the scene here kicks Brooklyn’s ass.

  27. Sarah October 9, 2011 at 1:49 pm #

I’d love to go to this show because I’ve missed pavement and malkmus every time they’ve played and I am totally broke and can’t afford to go to any shows….I’m not even reading the mercury anymore because I can’t stand to see all the music I’m missing….

  28. Alicia October 9, 2011 at 2:25 pm #

Back in Portland after a three year hiatus and I need a Crystal Ballroom fix… plus Pavement is the reason Indie rock is what it is.

  29. Christoph October 10, 2011 at 1:14 pm #

I haven’t seen Malkmus since I’ve lived in Portland (4+ years)… now’s as good of time as any. Hmm? Pretty please? With bacon on top? Extra crispy bacon…
