MODERN ENGLISH TO LIGHT UP THE ALADDIN THEATER

September 9: Modern English Reunion Tour @ Aladdin TheaterREMEMBER THIS? The new decade is shaping up to be a very busy and productive time for Modern English. Not only is 2010 the 31st anniversary of the long-running alternative pop-rock/post-punk band, but also, 2010 marks the release of Soundtrack—Modern English's first new album since 1996.

This year, four veterans of Modern English's early years—lead singer Robbie Grey, guitarist Gary McDowell, bassist Mick Conroy and keyboardist Stephen Walker—are hitting the road together for the first time since the mid-80s.

For those who remember the British outfit for their 1982 smash "I Melt with You", and other 80s hits such as "Hands Across the Sea," "Life in the Gladhouse" and "Ink and Paper," this reunion tour is an historic event. But as Grey, who has been Modern English's frontman since 1979, points out, the tour will not be simply an exercise in 1980s nostalgia; it will be a celebration of the present as well as the past. Modern English will perform songs from Soundtrack, including their infectious new single "It's OK," as well as favorites from classic 1980s albums like Mesh & Lace, After the Snow and Ricochet Days.

Thursday, September 9th, Portlanders can go back in time and see Modern English at historic The Aladdin Theater, (http://www.aladdin-theater.com) and cut a rug to some of their most recent anthems to boot. (We dare you to wear a side ponytail.)

Tickets available at the Aladdin Theater's box office or through ticketmaster.

I want (need, really) to go to this show because they float my boat. Ever since I was a wee kid, I’ve loved them- I would swoon over them on MTV (in the 80’s) by dancing on the couch with my faux microphone close to my lips and my hair teased to the displeasure of my mother and the couch springs. At the age of eight, I would imagine singing “I would Melt With You” and “Spinning Me Round” to my future boyfriend/husband… Well, I just got married (May 1, 2010) and now is my chance to sing these songs to him live in concert with Modern English by my side. I’ll even tease my hair (well, maybe).

…I even have my own words to “I Melt With You” as you may have noticed I had changed the title a wee bit…

Modern English was the soundtrack to my coming of age. What’s amazing is how timeless those songs are! I heard I Melt With You the other day and had a smile on my face for an hour. There’s something so uplifting about singing along to songs that have been with us since we were kids.
