About The Hold Steady
During our time as The Hold Steady, I've made a lot in interviews and onstage monologues about what little ambition we had when we started this band. We weren't sure if we would play shows or release records. We had seriously managed expectations. But in the end, we did end up playing shows and releasing records, and we are better people for it. We've seen a lot of the world, met a ton of great people, and played a whole bunch of rock and roll music. Our efforts have been rewarded beyond our wildest dreams.

It's not exactly a mind-blowing statement when I say that this is the best job I've ever had. That said, there are sacrifices and discomfort that come with this territory: busted relationships, distance from family, physical exhaustion, disconnection from civilian life, ringing ears, interminable waiting around, trying to get through a ninety minute show when you have food poisoning, etc.

Our new record, Heaven is Whenever, is about struggle and reward. It's about accepting suffering as a necessary part of a joyous life. It's about how love can help us rise above these struggles. It's about faith. It's about how bad it hurts to settle for less….continue reading

Thank you for being a part of this.

I’d like to win tickets because I love discovering new bands and it would force me to leave the house.

Its my 35th birthday on thurs . This would be a great birthday gift .. since i just moved from AZ and havent been out much..

  3. Nate August 18, 2010 at 10:58 am #

I’d like the tickets because I’m from Minnesota, I played Lifter Puller records on the air when I was a college DJ and I have consistently dragged skeptical friends to Hold Steady shows just to prove to them how awesome you guys are. The only person I have yet to get to one of your shows is my wife. She needs to be exposed to the joy that is your live show.

I would absolutely love to see this show! The Crystal is one of my favorite venues and seeing this band live would be amazing! Pick me, and I promise to have a fantastic time… that’s what you’re going for right???

  5. Mike August 18, 2010 at 11:23 am #

Because, despite it all (the dead-end job, the beat-up four-banger, the lonesome nights), I hold steady and stay positive. That, and when I listen to the Hold Steady, I feel unbridled joy, something that is often elusive and transitory.

I’d love to win these tickets because The Hold Steady are one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. Their music is contagious and lyrically resonant. Truly great storytellers.

  9. Connor August 19, 2010 at 11:37 am #

It’s been a long week and I got nothing to do on Friday night…I’d love to see a sweet show like The Hold Steady

  10. Josh August 19, 2010 at 11:45 am #

I’d like those tickets because in the year 2205, the disembodied head of Craig Finn will be the leader of the Cyborg Revolution, and I, a fellow cyborg, have traveled back in time to see my future leader perform at the Crystal Ballroom, only to find that my CyberMoney is worth nothing here! Stupid meatbags!

Father, can I tell your congregation how a resurrection really feels?

  12. Sara August 19, 2010 at 12:09 pm #

  14. jenn August 19, 2010 at 12:24 pm #

I’ve been a huge fan of the Hold Steady for years and just can’t afford tickets right now. I haven’t been able to see them live yet and would love for the opportunity.

  15. David August 19, 2010 at 12:37 pm #

Love them! Would love to see them live! Free is a great price.

  17. alc August 19, 2010 at 1:26 pm #

Ever get really stoned on a sunday afternoon and rock out to The Hold Steady sitting on your living room floor….ALL DAY LONG??!! I have.

  18. Michelle August 19, 2010 at 1:30 pm #

I’d love to go see The Hold Steady at the Crystal. I haven’t seen them live before (I hear they’re amazing!), and I’ve never been to a show at the Crystal. I’ve been deprived.

  19. Kelly August 19, 2010 at 1:56 pm #

I’m not sure WHY one would have to justify a) seeing the Hold Steady, b) show the Crystal or c) Free…but all of the above are awesome.

  20. Will August 19, 2010 at 1:58 pm #

I have been following Craig Finn since he was the singer for Lifter Puller and he has really influenced my own music. As Hold Steady have really advanced their careers, they have priced me out of the market for tickets to their shows. I would love to see them again, and getting these tickets would really deliver that for me.

  21. Erik August 19, 2010 at 2:04 pm #

Because city center used to be the center of our scene, but now city center’s over (no one really goes there). I’d happily make an exception, however, with free tickets to tomorrow night’s show.

There are two schools of thought: one is that drinking is something that is detrimental to your health and a scourge on society. The other is that some brewskis with your friends can improve your mental health (or at least your Friday night). The Hold Steady subscribes to the second theory, and I do, too. There’s nothing like raising your glass to lines like “lord to be 33 forever” and “gonna walk around and drink some more.” Won’t you help me afford mcmenamins drinks by giving me a ticket? If not I’ll have to drink…alone.

  23. Jase August 19, 2010 at 2:24 pm #

I just moved here from North Dakota, and i can’t find a job. Going to see one of my favorite bands from back home would really put a big smile on my face, and welcome me to portland!!!

  24. minh August 19, 2010 at 4:13 pm #

    cool band!!!!

  25. shelby thomas August 19, 2010 at 4:33 pm #

I would love to win these to take my boyfriend. Seeing this band would make for a great date night.

  26. Erin August 19, 2010 at 5:17 pm #

I would like to win these because I adore the Hold Steady but am currently hell of broke.

  27. Lee August 19, 2010 at 5:39 pm #

I would like to win tickets to The Hold Steady because the last time that I had a chance to see the band with the DBT I had to miss the show because I had to take care of my sick daughter. My friends told me I missed a heck of a show.

I would love to have the opportunity to finaly see them live.

From The New York Times, Oct. 1, 2006:

“A tip for rabid Hold Steady fans everywhere: Don’t be shy. If you hear the band is coming to your town, go ahead and throw a pre-concert warm-up party. Encourage your friends to write their favorite lyrics all over their bodies. Share an expensive bottle of Scotch with Mr. Finn. Do all that, as some students at Bowdoin College did, and you may win the ultimate prize: a salute in song. A line from the new album originally went, “She drove down from Colgate with a carload of girlfriends.” But after the frenzy in Brunswick, Mr. Finn rewrote the line: now it’s Bowdoin, not Colgate.”

It was a bottle of 12-year Cragganmore and that I shared with Mr. Finn and it was perhaps the best night of my life. I haven’t seen them in three years or so. Far too long.

Hopefully a silly typo won’t disqualify the awesomeness of my comment!

  29. Matt Shoobridge August 19, 2010 at 6:10 pm #

Please, I want to see them.

  30. Renata Tirta August 19, 2010 at 8:35 pm #

I would like to bring my hoodrat boyfriend to the show, that’s why! Pick me!

  31. MsD August 20, 2010 at 7:46 am #

Do you really read these comments, or just pick randomly? If random it is, I think I might have a chance.

Love the Hold Steady and live music and would love to go.

  32. Ems August 20, 2010 at 10:53 am #

yes please i’d like some free tickets and i have several great reasons:

    a) Bobby Drake
    b) i will dance like a crazy lady when they play Sequestered in Memphis
    c) my big brother is a large chap who will kick your ass if you don’t

  33. Jesse August 20, 2010 at 1:20 pm #

I would be grateful beyond words to win these tickets for three reasons:

1.) Since moving back to portland it has been quite the struggle staying afloat, In a terrible economy. I would never be able to afford going with my girl to an event/events like this, and with how rough a summer it’s been it would be truly a gift to let loose for a weekend

2.) I just moved back up to Portland after being away from Oregon for almost 6 years, and would love the opportunity to check out the local music venues I have yet to discover.

3.) I love music, in all forms and since coming back to Portland my musical horizon continues to broaden, I love it and want more!
