Let's face it — the holiday season can be a humiliating time. We are usually at our fattest, brokest, drunkest, most-stressed-out, running on too much eggnog and no sleep at this time of year, trying to free up an hour to take our children who are in a screaming candy cane-induced psychosis to see Santa; or if we are still single, we're wondering if St. Nick will send us someone to kiss under the mistletoe, and on the off chance that he does, dealing with the uncertain dating dilemma of whether we give or don't give that person a gift since we probably want him/her to stick around at least until New Years so that we will have someone to kiss while the ball drops.
A laugh, and remembering that we are not alone, even if we feel that way, crying in to our mulled wine as we stuff ourselves full of fruitcake – would do us all some good, and Word To the Wise(men) should definitely deliver. A collaboration between various storytelling groups Back Fence PDX (represented in this edition by David Figler of NPR/Heeb Magazine and pet psychic Bridget Pilloud), Mortified (which stars people who are wiling to read aloud their most embarrassing, pathetic and private teenage diary entries, poems, love letters, lyrics and locker notes), and True Stories (a memoir and music series that specialized in humor and humiliation, featuring Scott Pool and Stacy Bolt of OPB).
Oh…and I guess there will be beautiful women in swimsuits and designer elf hats handing out free cupcakes (from Saint Cupcake, of course). Merry Christmas. Hosted by Adam Shearer of Weinland and John Roderick of The Long Winters.
