The Fine Art of Piano Dancing: Ben Folds returns to Portland
You have to love a man with a piano. Like Elton John and Billy Joel before him, watching Ben Folds rock out on a piano is a spectacle to behold. And the ability to dance while playing the piano doesn't come easily. Trust me.
The last time I saw Ben was during high school, when black frame glasses and wool sweaters were all the rage (though they continue to be in Portland today). He lost the Five in 1999, produced the theatrical-piano-rock album Rockin' the Suburbs in 2001, and in recent years became the first person to broadcast a live concert over Myspace, released an album of acappella arrangements of his music featuring the country's best college vocal troupes and produced a new album, Way to Normal in 2008.
In the past he has performed with a live orchestra, a smaller back-up band, and in early 2008 played his first completely solo show in many years at Western Connecticut State University. Personally, I'm hoping for just the man and his piano.
