Post Rally update: Pictures (and video coming) from the Sam Adams Rally here.

From Facebook event (28 34 confirmed attendees so far):
Portland Mayor Sam Adams

Sam Adams had sex with an 18 year old and he lied about it. We don't care. He's a good politician and we still support him. He should not resign.

Update 4 10AM 1/23: There will be a press conference today at noon for Sam. From just received email (from Pink Martini publicist*, which is a bit unusual, but Sam could use a better PR agent for sure)

Thomas M. Lauderdale, Victoria Frey, Stephen Cassell & Paul King Organize Press Conference to Support Mayor Sam Adams

Today, Friday January 23, 12noon at City Hall

WHAT: Press Conference with Community Leaders and Elected Officials in Support of Mayor Sam Adams
WHEN: Friday, January 23, 12noon at City Hall (4th Avenue Side)
We hope you will join us. Please be in touch if you have any questions.
best: Peter Murray,

Dear friends :

We are happy to report tonight that Sam Adams is regaining his confidence and is determined to stay in office.  Throughout the day, I have received emails of support and encouragement by nearly 100 of you — from Academy Award nominee-Gus Van Sant to First Lady of Oregon Mary Oberst.**

We are now going forward with our press conference, to be held today (Friday) @ noon @ City Hall on the SW 4th Avenue side.  Not to be confused with the rally of support @ 5:30pm, this press conference will feature community leaders and elected officials with the important message that there is a lot of work to do in our city, that we should remain calm and not rashly cry out for the mayor's resignation.  This press conference will also be an opportunity for people to express their personal support for Mayor Adams should they choose.  At the very least, we must remain unified in our support for the agenda set forth by the Mayor.

Please let other community leaders know about this press conference.

Now is the hour.
with best wishes : Thomas M. Lauderdale, Victoria Frey, Stephen Cassell & Paul King.

**Update 1/25: Pete Forsyth sent this over to us: an open letter to the media, re: Sam Adams. In case you were wondering (you were not), we are not opinion media…our opinion is simply “More events and more free passes to said events”

*Why Pink Martini publicist? From @EvaCatHerder on twitter:@PdxPipeline Thomas Lauderdale is leading the charge on Sam not resigning, which is why notice came via Pink Martini PR.

I’ll be at the rally tomorrow! Hoping to get a camera to film some of it too.

The only question which has any validity is whether or not Adams had an illegal relationship with a minor. It is the only question he should be required to answer. If there is no evidence that he did, he shouldn’t be put in the position of defending himself. His lie was in defense of his PRIVATE life. I’m horrified at the intrusion.

I’ve had enough of nosy reporters trying to dig up smut on public servants. They have a right to a private life. As I understand it, the young man was an intern in Salem, not under Adams supervision. This does not, in my book, constitute abuse of power. I very much resent how much time and energy has gone into the attempt to destroy our mayor. Enough!

I plan on staying home. Sam Adams let me down, I cannot support him.

    Sam Adams should resign.

He lied to win the Mayor’s race, thus he stole the election.

If he resigns, he should not leave politics, but should run again in the special election for his replacement. He would win, and he could then govern with a forceful mandate.

I could care less about his social life. What I do take offense to is his outright defense of the allegations back in 2007. His quote:

“This is one of the worst smears you can make against a gay guy. It preys on the homophobic stereotype that gay men cannot be trusted with young people.”

I do not wish for him to resign because I think, all in all, he’s a decent man and can help Portland. But I think he should put all his energies into helping Portland even MORE to regain our trust.
