Interview: Blitzen Trapper’s Eric Earley | Portland MusicFest NW Info

Blitzen TrapperWith a yet another new album out on September 13th and sitting on the cusp of a nationwide tour, its a rare moment when Blitzen Trapper gets to play a set in its hometown of Portland. The band has gone from self-releasing its first three albums to being on the tongues of every major music critic, from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork.

But that doesn’t mean lead singer/songwriter Eric Earley isn’t enjoying his summer like any other Oregonian, lazing around the river and playing bar gigs with his other band, Denver.  Blitzen Trapper will headline a show at the Crystal Ballroom for MusicFest NW on Friday, September 9 and play a free show at Music Millennium Monday, September 12, so there is plenty of opportunity to catch these homegrown rockers before they head out on tour in October.

Earley had a few minutes between river trips to catch up with Pipeline this week.

PDX Pipeline: Are you from Portland originally?

Eric Earley: I’m originally from Salem then moved to Portland. It’s the city you live in if you live in Oregon.

PDX: Is there another PDX band that you admire/think is up and coming?

EE: There are a lot of great bands (in Portland). The Fruit Bats are really good.  So are Alela Diane.  There’s lots of good stuff. Read the rest of this entry »

Eleven years ago, Portland, Oregon was a sleepy burg, and MusicfestNW was little more than a hope and a prayer—a hope of putting on a music festival that matched the outsized ambitions of the alt-weekly that founded it and a prayer that the wheels wouldn’t fall off. Today, Portland is one of the most exciting cities on the globe. And MusicfestNW has become the third largest indoor music festival in the United States.

Time magazine dubbed our festival one of 50 Authentic American Experiences of 2009. MusicfestNW is not just about the hottest music; it’s also become the perfect platform for companies seeking to engage consumers and give them an experience like no other.

“The Northwest has always been on the cutting edge when it comes to music, and here’s your chance to find out why.”—Time.com

Just the Facts: MFNW is produced by Willamette Week, Portland’s Pulitzer Prize-winning alt-weekly newspaper. WW not only covers culture, it creates it. Each week, a quarter million people read the paper and its website, and for months preceding MFNW, Willamette Week puts its broad shoulders firmly behind the festival.

In 2010 MFNW showcased more than 170 bands across 18 venues including the brand new outdoor venue, Levi’s Pioneer Stage at Pioneer Courthouse Square. More than 20,000 fans danced and sweated to performances by The National, The Decemberists, Major Lazer, Panda Bear, Okkervil River, Wiz Khalifa, The Smashing Pumpkins and Black Lips.

In 2011, MFNW will be taking over the city. See you September 7th through September 11th.

Musicfest NW Saturday Night Recap (Don't/Unnatural Helpers/Tyvek/The Zeros) and What's Left Tonight

By Travis Ritter

Parking in downtown on a Saturday night (especially during MFNW) can be a complete clusterfuck, so I tried to avoid that by showing up early. With a sweet parking spot a few blocks from Ash St. Saloon and a couple hours to kill before seeing one of my favorite Seattle bands, Unnatural Helpers (myspace.com/unnaturalhelpers) I wandered around without a set plan. Rather than braving the lines that were forming at Berbati's, or going all the way up to Jimmy Mak's to see a few Seattle hip hop acts I've seen many times before, I settled in at Ash St. Good thing, too.
I caught the band Don't (myspace.com/thebanddont) who were playing the slot just before the Helpers. Something was striking about their sound, that reminded me of The Wipers. Their drummer Sam Henry, as it turned out, was the original drummer for that influential NW punk band. His drumming was calculated and resoundingly familiar, accented by two differently tuned floor toms that had long been a part of Wipers darker punk sound. Their long, cool female lead singer dressed in Read the rest of this entry »

MusicFest NW Friday Night Recap (Thee Oh Sees/The Gories) & What's To Come Tonight

By Travis Ritter:

Thee Oh Sees are the hardest working underground band today. Their relentless touring schedule and recording output over the last few years might even surpass the Beatles (okay, maybe that's a stretch, but the band has released at least two full-lengths and nearly a dozen 45rpm singles every year). Last night at Dante's, the four-piece San Francisco band, fronted by the enigmatic crack John Dwyer, played a prime time set supporting the recently reunited Detroit garage stomp legends The Gories. Thee Oh Sees brand of garage rock is like none other, and it only continues to get better. The band ran the gamut from 3-minute long jangling, indelibly catchy dirty pop songs ("I Was Denied"), to 10-minute long hallucinogenic, krautrock-inflicted jam outs ("Warm Slime"). For the duration of their forty minute set, the crowd was in full motion, pogoing, fist pumping, crowd surfing, and smiling.

Dante's was at capacity during their set, which caused a huge line to form outside. If you went outside to smoke, you had to get back in line, so most people stuck it out inside so they'd get to see The Gories. People were stoked when The Gories, lead by The  Dirtbombs Mick Turner, finally came onstage after 12:30, but their rudimentary, stripped down garage rock lacked both the energy and variation that Thee Oh Sees brought. Maybe it's just because I don't know their songs very well, but after six or so songs, I felt like I heard enough. Sure, they might have been a huge influence on the cavestomp doo slop of King Khan and BBQ Show, but two guys playing guitar, and a drummer who played on two toms and a kick (no cymbals, no snare) isn't the most exciting thing in the world, unless you're a huge Gories fan. And that, I am not.

Garage rock is my bag, for sure, and some of the acts I recommend you check out tonight fall under that category. Firstly is Seattle's Read the rest of this entry »
