Eleven years ago, Portland, Oregon was a sleepy burg, and MusicfestNW was little more than a hope and a prayer—a hope of putting on a music festival that matched the outsized ambitions of the alt-weekly that founded it and a prayer that the wheels wouldn’t fall off. Today, Portland is one of the most exciting cities on the globe. And MusicfestNW has become the third largest indoor music festival in the United States.

Time magazine dubbed our festival one of 50 Authentic American Experiences of 2009. MusicfestNW is not just about the hottest music; it’s also become the perfect platform for companies seeking to engage consumers and give them an experience like no other.

“The Northwest has always been on the cutting edge when it comes to music, and here’s your chance to find out why.”—Time.com

Just the Facts: MFNW is produced by Willamette Week, Portland’s Pulitzer Prize-winning alt-weekly newspaper. WW not only covers culture, it creates it. Each week, a quarter million people read the paper and its website, and for months preceding MFNW, Willamette Week puts its broad shoulders firmly behind the festival.

In 2010 MFNW showcased more than 170 bands across 18 venues including the brand new outdoor venue, Levi’s Pioneer Stage at Pioneer Courthouse Square. More than 20,000 fans danced and sweated to performances by The National, The Decemberists, Major Lazer, Panda Bear, Okkervil River, Wiz Khalifa, The Smashing Pumpkins and Black Lips.

In 2011, MFNW will be taking over the city. See you September 7th through September 11th.

MusicFest NW Friday Night Recap (Thee Oh Sees/The Gories) & What's To Come Tonight

By Travis Ritter:

Thee Oh Sees are the hardest working underground band today. Their relentless touring schedule and recording output over the last few years might even surpass the Beatles (okay, maybe that's a stretch, but the band has released at least two full-lengths and nearly a dozen 45rpm singles every year). Last night at Dante's, the four-piece San Francisco band, fronted by the enigmatic crack John Dwyer, played a prime time set supporting the recently reunited Detroit garage stomp legends The Gories. Thee Oh Sees brand of garage rock is like none other, and it only continues to get better. The band ran the gamut from 3-minute long jangling, indelibly catchy dirty pop songs ("I Was Denied"), to 10-minute long hallucinogenic, krautrock-inflicted jam outs ("Warm Slime"). For the duration of their forty minute set, the crowd was in full motion, pogoing, fist pumping, crowd surfing, and smiling.

Dante's was at capacity during their set, which caused a huge line to form outside. If you went outside to smoke, you had to get back in line, so most people stuck it out inside so they'd get to see The Gories. People were stoked when The Gories, lead by The  Dirtbombs Mick Turner, finally came onstage after 12:30, but their rudimentary, stripped down garage rock lacked both the energy and variation that Thee Oh Sees brought. Maybe it's just because I don't know their songs very well, but after six or so songs, I felt like I heard enough. Sure, they might have been a huge influence on the cavestomp doo slop of King Khan and BBQ Show, but two guys playing guitar, and a drummer who played on two toms and a kick (no cymbals, no snare) isn't the most exciting thing in the world, unless you're a huge Gories fan. And that, I am not.

Garage rock is my bag, for sure, and some of the acts I recommend you check out tonight fall under that category. Firstly is Seattle's Read the rest of this entry »

Portland's creative weekend: Inverge & cre8con

This weekend was one chock full of things to do here in Portland, especially if you are an iPhone-toting, Twittering designer or marketer.  Inverge, a two-day interactive convergence conference, kicked off Thursday and had a mix of techie marketing presenters. Then, on Saturday, cre8con, Portland's one-day creative conference, took off with artists inspiring us with their processes.  Both conferences were really cool, especially if you're a geek like me.

The PDX Twitter culture exploded. Anyone not attending the conference could keep track very easily, thanks to the constant tweets of PowerPoint slides and in-the-room happenings.  Tweets on Inverge can be found here, the best of which are from Carri Bugbee though I contributed a little as well).  And it appears many did follow the twitter feeds, since at one time “inverge” took the lead in twitter searches over the Republican National Convention.  Cre8con even turned it up a notch by capturing video of the conference (all except, perhaps, of the Focus Features Coraline scenes that are to be kept from the masses.)  And as soon as it's online (after the awesome works of Johnny Hartman and Rod Pitman who filmed everything documentary style), I will post a direct link in the comments to this post.
