Today & Tonight: St.Vincent at the Doug Fir | All Ages + Adult Show

Posted by Mike Harper

Oh So Saintly…

St. vincentThe calm croon of Annie Clark's voice can be a smiling trap  to capture you in a cascading lull as her gut-pulling guitar will tear at your ears with the lovely contrasting blows of string-bending and wall-of-sound instrumentation. Seeing her is like a glimpse of a nymph (one who listened to a good bit of Beatles), her small stature a misleading element of her raucously perfect musical wave that combines the sound of destruction and whispers of sonnetesque ballads.

St. Vincent is gracing the Doug Fir with not one but two sets on Saturday, February 6th, including one ALL AGES matinee at 5pm ($15). Catch her later at 9pm for just two bucks more!

Wax Fingers – August 15th @ Doug Fir

Posted by Nathalie Weinstein

Three dudes and a laptop

waxfingerspicPortland musicians Wax Fingers will bring their aggressive, atmospheric math rock to the Doug Fir Lounge Saturday night with Experimental Dental School, Swim Swam Swun and Mighty Tiger.

If you have a hankering for live, melt-your-face-off indie rock this weekend, then this show is for you, and at only $7 for admission, it's a bargain.

Zack Jacobson (guitar), Tommy Franzen (drums) and Pete Bosack (guitar and vocals) met in 2006 on the virtual world of Craigslist.

"We are a Craiglist band," said Jacobson. "I moved here with the intention of finding like minded musicians, so the first thing I did was put out an ad on Craigslist."

Jacobson says he instantly clicked with Bosack and Franzen, and after repeated efforts at trying out bassists after the band's current bassist left, the group decided to leave the bass notes up their handy laptop, which is present at every show.

A Southeast Portlander, Jacobson's favorite bridge is the St. John's and when he needs a stiff drink, he heads to either Beulahland or Sidestreet Tavern for a freshly squeezed gin and juice. He was kind enough to chat with me after band rehearsal one night about Wax Finger's sound, what he's been reading, and the five albums he couldn't live without. Read the rest of this entry »

Pipeline Pick: Starlight Mints @ Doug Fir Tonight + Video

Starlight Mints @ the Granada Theater
Dallas Texas 6-25-09
Shot by granadamusiclive

I have been looking around, but can't find any quality video of the Mints new tour on the interwebs. Hopefully, Brewcaster and I can change that tonight. Either way, you can see that they put on a fun performance even if the audio in this is shite.

In 2005, I couch-surfed on Allan Vest's (lead singer) woman's futon for a couple months (get married so this sentence will be less clunky!). It was shaped like the sun (from owner: “or a half moon when it was not made into a bed”). Allan pretty much lived there as well and we three spent many an evening sipping bourbons and playing cards. It was a good time. It was a great time. This will be a fantastic show and I would go with “not miss” if you are looking to see music tonight in Portland.

Natalie Portman's Shaved Head, Copy, Hey Champ, Glint @ Doug Fir | July 8

Seattle's Natalie Portman's Shaved Head is one of those bands that, once you hear about, you can't seem to forget, if only because of their ridiculous V is for Vendetta inspired name (an alias that they created as a team name for a vocabulary contest).

With lyrics like “I picked her up in my Trans, and, baby / We hit the night like a slap in the face” and “Do you like my sideways ponytail? / I do! I do!”, their music is equally as ridiculous. And fun-loving. And super danceable. And unlike some of the other similar 80's synth-pop/electro/happy-go-lucky indie rock music nowadays, Natalie Portman's Shaved Head can actually pull it off.

White Rabbits @ Doug Fir, Portland, OregonTonight Doug Fir delivers yet another promising live show, this time by Brooklyn's 6 member percussion driven indie-pop band, White Rabbits.

If you are into clever romantic melodies with a skip and a jump, combined with story-telling lyrics that reveal nuances influenced by the Walkmen and Spoon, then head to this show.

Tonight: Bat For Lashes @ Doug Fir

Posted by Christine Taylor

Bat For Lashes at Doug FirWhat do crystals, smoke, animal identities and moody colored lights have to do with Doug Fir Lounge tonight? Everything, if you plan to be at the Bat for Lashes show promoting their latest CD called, ‘Two Suns'. This British band is danceable pop music with electro influences who are equally known for their creative videos.

Seeing this show will be not unlike witnessing a fantastical mash-up of Queen and ELO, with more beauty, and modernized for people like you and me. Surely it will be a performance made for those who dream of riding a choreographed BMX dance on an open road at night, under the stars, where thanks to our animal guides, no harm can come to us.
