Thursday: Joshua Bell @ Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall | Oregon Symphony

From our partners at Oregon Symphony:

September 16: Joshua Bell @ Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall | Oregon SymphonyThe Oregon Symphony presents Superstar Violinist Joshua Bell
Thursday, September 16th 7:30pm.
Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall

Back for one night only to help kick off the Oregon Symphony's star studded 2010/11 Concert season. Violinist and enchanter Joshua Bell, a one-time teen-age prodigy, is now 40-something and the closest thing classical music has to a rock star. Program includes "Suite from The Tender Land" by Aaron Copeland and Bell will be playing Edouard Lalo's "Symphonie espagnole for Violin and Orchestra"

Bell performs on a violin made in 1713 by Antonio Stradivari that is known as the Gibson Stradivarius, which is infamous for having been stolen in 1936 from the Carnegie Hall dressing room of violinist Bronislaw Huberman while Huberman was on stage playing another instrument. After the theft, the Gibson Stradivarius disappeared without a trace for more than a half-century, until it was offered for sale in London in 1987. Bell acquired it in 2001.

Bell's playing … does nothing less then tell human beings why they bother to live. – Interview magazine

Feb 15-24: Portland Jazz Festival | Ornette Coleman | Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall

Ornette Coleman

2009 Update: Portland Twitter Giveaway: PDX Jazz Fest Tickets | February 13-22

The non-”risk-free” Portland Jazz Festival begins next weekend. Tickets are a little high for many of us, but how many chances do you have to see Ornette Coleman? Not many, so buy them quickly. From the PDX Jazz website:

A great deal of contemporary mainstream jazz, generally speaking, is risk free. Most
jazz festivals in America play it safe, sticking with a successful and predictable stable of
artists who rarely take the music beyond its resting place in history.

The fifth annual Portland Jazz Festival, presented by Qwest & The Oregonian A&E, set
for February 15-24, dares to go where few jazz festivals in North America have ever
been — moving ever forward. Indeed, any jazz event which opens with free jazz
innovator Ornette Coleman and later closes with avant-garde pianist Cecil Taylor, is
admittedly `out there.' But, along with the likes of Parker, Coltrane, Rollins, Monk,
Mingus and Miles, these were the players who kept pushing jazz foward; more afraid of
standing still perhaps than spinning off the road out of control.

Buy tickets and see the full schedule at PDXJazz.com. Bad Plus at Crystal Ballroom on the 16th…
