December Events from Performance Works NW & other Portland artists &Â groups

November 29, 2007 — lindapaustin |:: Dec. 6-8 | Luciana Proaño's "Chaski"
Thursday-Saturday, December 6-8 @ 7:00pm
Info/tickets: Artixpdx.com or 503-977-0620

Chaski is a multimedia presentation about endurance and trance, inspired by the Inca Andean runners. A new version of a work created in 1997 and performed 1998, 1999 and 2000. In the Quechua language, CHASKI means "messenger" and refers to the legendary relay runners who carried messages across the deserts, mountains and jungles of Peru.

"Chaski is about the paradox of moving without getting anywhere, the fusion of the line with the infinite," says Proaño, of the collaboration with JB Butler, her husband and well-known jazz guitarist.

Proano dances with fierce and expressive abandon, drawing on improvisation and ritual, as well as unorthodox set design and video, to narrate the mythology. Butler's original composition is an interpretation of Andean, Indian and free-form jazz rhythms and harmonies, and beautifully supports and drives Proano's movement.

The music invokes a heartbeat, the video suggests a watery depth, and the result is an intense, yet playful study of endurance and the insignificance of time.

local youth cut a rug on the dance floor. The show airs on various
Portland Metro cable access channels.

In light of the recent string of bike/car collisions and cyclist
fatalities in the Portland area, this episode of TPOD will be “The
Bike Show.” Featured performers and guests will include:

The Online Romance
The Sprockettes
BMX tricks by Blake and Lee
Bikes to Rwanda
The Bike Farm

This event is free to attend and is open to all ages. Though dancing
is not absolutely mandatory, it is highly encouraged, and everyone is
made welcome. (Be prepared for your friends to ask you, “Was that you
I saw grooving on cable access?” for months afterward.) Taping begins
promptly at 5:30 PM and will continue for a few hours, so please show
up on time!

Hi all,

These are the dates:
Dec. 9,16
Jan. 6,13
12-4pm at PWNW
4625 SE 67th @ Foster Rd.

We've decided to keep diving into the material underneath the tuning scores. The workshops will include a deep sensory personal warm-up and opportunities to experience an extension of the warm-up state in dances with others. Then we will play with some tuning scores both doing and watching. No previous experience is necessary, and we hope you will gain some understanding of what tuning scores and the under-the-surface activities are all about. Your questions will inspire us!

All this, in some way, is in preparation for a visit to Portland by Lisa Nelson early next spring. We hope anybody who is interested in this work will take the opportunity to dive in over the next months, and be able to also interact with Lisa when she comes.

The deal is the same, a sliding scale starting at $5, but don't stay away if you can't afford that. Also, please pass the word.

thanks,
karen

Chaski is a multimedia presentation about endurance and trance, inspired by the Inca Andean runners. A new version of a work created in 1997 and performed 1998, 1999 and 2000. In the Quechua language, CHASKI means “messenger” and refers to the legendary relay runners who carried messages across the deserts, mountains and jungles of Peru. “Chaski is about the paradox of moving without getting anywhere, the fusion of the line with the infinite,” says Proaño, of the collaboration with JB Butler, her husband and well-known jazz guitarist. The music invoke a heartbeat, the video suggests a watery depth, and the result is an intense, yet playful study of endurance and the insignificance of time.

:: Dec. 15 | ScratchPDX

Hey all,

Just a quick note to say thanks to those who were part of the sell-out crowd at November's ScratchPDX, the opener of our new season. The season got off to a great start with seven dazzling and challenging performances from up-and-coming artists in Portland. Check out the website www.scratchpdx.com to see pictures and details of the line-up.

We are gathering pace for the second show (Dec 15th), and already all the slots are filled! However if you are interested in performing at Scratch, we are currently looking for pieces for our January and February shows, so drop us an email at contact@scratchpdx.com with your rough idea. Please include type of performance, number of participants and estimated length.

In case you don't know, ScratchPDX aims:
to support performance by creating an open and accessible atmosphere in which experimentation is encouraged.
to promote artists by providing them with a public platform to show work and continuing to expand our audience base.
to facilitate dialogue and collaboration between artists in the spirit of collective development and mutual benefit.
to deepen understanding of performance, creative processes and the audience/performer relationship through feedback and conversation about work.

It's also a really fun night with plenty of opportunities to socialize in a great atmosphere at Hipbone Studio (1847 E Burnside). If you are thinking of proposing something but you've never been to the show before, we recommend coming down to check it out in December, so you can get a feel for it and maybe even talk to us about your idea. We'd love to meet you!

Called "a blistering evocation of genocide's ghosts," by the Oregonian at it's 2005 work-in-progress premier, Forgotten Memories centers on Tuol Sleng [hill of the poison tree], an abandoned suburban Phnom Penh high school that was code-named S-21and transformed into a Khmer Rouge interrogation center from 1975-1979. Headed by Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge combined extremist ideology, ethnic animosity, and a disregard for human life to produce murder on a massive scale. Approximately 1.7 million people lost their lives (21% of the country's population) under the Pol Pot regime. Over 17,000 prisoners were interrogated, tortured, and executed inside the walls of S-21. Tran toured Tuol Sleng in 2004 while on exchange in Cambodia with the Mekong Project, a program of Dance Theater Workshop in New York. After the first work-in-progress showing of Forgotten Memories in 2005, Tran returned to Cambodia to conduct additional research in order to complete the work. Endeavoring to engage the audience viscerally through the combined mediums of film, original music, sets and movement, the completed Forgotten Memories is per formed in the intimate setting of Imago Theater, inviting audiences acquire a first-hand taste of the horrors associated with war.

Evolver begins with a woman wearing an enormous skirt. Beneath its folds she creates a world where people are continually changing from humans in their most repressed forms into monkeys, and back again. During their metamorphoses and encounters we try and determine which is the more desirable state. The movement contains forced and awkward commercial/pop gestures in juxtaposition with animalistic ones. By forcing these extremes we try to illustrate what it is to be human, we wonder if we really like the direction some evolution seems to take, and we relish in the happy accidents that seem to occur in the meantime.

Well, I can't tell you that I am able to fully describe this performance. One quote (very positive) was “a flock of birds with OCD“. All I know is that I am not necessarily Mr. Modern Dance and I had a great time. These pics are not the best–I am no pro photographer–but there are about 75 of them and a you can get a decent thought about what to expect.

It also gives a good idea of what it is like to watch “a flock of birds with OCD”. I definitely reccomend seeing this show before it ends this weekend.

Performance Works NorthWest/Linda Austin Dance is pleased to announce the premiere of "circus me around" at a spacious warehouse at 640 SE Stark, in Portland's Central Eastside. Conceived and directed by Linda Austin, circus me around is inspired by the zings of pleasure and pricklings of curiosity aroused by fleeting, partial views of activities in the city landscape. For this multi-disciplinary work, architects Ean Eldred, Richard Garfield, John Kashiwabara and Peter Nylen create an environment assembled of skeletal scafflolding and a translucent shrink wrap skin, yielding various vantage points for the viewing of three simultaneous dances amid the clattering, dripping, clicking, whooping, and fluttering of Seth Nehil's spatialized sound score. Costumes are by David Rafn and the performers. The set and bodies are stunningly enhanced by Jeff Forbes' lighting.

New Venue! Portland can always use good new venues… It's a big ol' warehouse in an industrial area, with a full bar and vast interior spaces to fill with lasers and lights and lots of dancers. They're calling it On Air, and judging from what they've lined up for the opening night, this could be a great addition to the Portland scene…

Rabbit In The Moon is a legendary live electronic music group; since 1993 they've entertained crowds all around the world with their utterly awesome beats and manic antics – LED suits, giant hamster balls (for rolling – on top of the crowd!, flamethrowers… and more.

And R.I.T.M is just the headliner – there are 13 additional DJs and performers listed, ranging from the psytrance of Epsilon to the visuals of VJ Disco Beaver.

The On Air venue is at 1300 N River St. (under the Fremont Bridge) near the Albina MAX stop – see map
