Nov. 13-17: Acclaimed storytellers entertain all ages at November festival @ Multnomah County Library's Tapestry of Tales Storytelling Festival

Discover the power of a good story!

Experience the skill of professional storytellers and share your own story at Multnomah County Library's Tapestry of Tales Storytelling Festival, Nov. 13-17.

Take a raucous romp through Love Lost, Found and Fumbled with Beth Horner. Listen to stories and songs with Andy Offutt Irwin (Most people have an inner kid. Andy Offutt Irwin has an outer one.) In addition to Horner and Irwin, the festival features acclaimed international teller Carol Russell, as well as regional tellers Rick Huddle and Anne Rutherford. Events are scheduled at various libraries and locations throughout the community; most are free.

And this festival is not just for kids! At Cringe Down Memory Lane at Belmont Library on Tuesday, Nov. 13th @ 6:30pm, read your most embarrassing high school journal entry out loud. At DIY Stories: The Day I Really Earned My Paycheck at Central Library on Thursday, Nov. 15th @ 12pm, share your best/funniest/scariest/weirdest stories from the working world.

November 12: Out of the Book Films with David Halberstam

David Halberstam, perhaps best known for The Best and the Brightest, died in a car wreck shortly before completing The Coldest Winter, a history of the Korean War. Powells has chosen the book as the subject of its second Out of the Book film. The 28-minute film will be shown on November 12 at the Bagdad Theater. Tickets are $9.

In addition to the movie, the film's producer will interview Korean War veteran Dick Raybould, Morris Buckwalter, formerly of Trailblazers management and sportswriter John Strawn about the book and about Halberstam.

While it may seem strange to have two sports speakers at an event about the Korean War, their inclusion makes great sense as Halberstam wrote as extensively in the realm of sports, as he did in politics. Halberstam was one of the great journalists of the 20th century and he is a worthy subject of this exciting new means integration of book and film media

Fake news guy Stephen Colbert pokes fun at Portland

Portland: a communist, hippie stronghold?

So says faux newsman Stephen Colbert, who's hawking his new book, “I Am America (And So Can You!)”

The book, he says in a clip from a recent episode of “The Colbert Report,” “even made waves in hippie stronghold Portland, Oregon, where Powell's Books hosted a release party.”

Colbert pans to an image of beer-drinking, Portland-dwelling Colbert fans lined up to buy the book at Powell's. Colbert takes a good look at the cash register and notices that Powell's is selling the book at a discount.

“Look, I know Portland is a communist but … Powell's Books, you owe me eight bucks. Cash money.”

• All ages are invited to the Bagdad Theater for a free showing of Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix at 2:00 pm. Kids will get free popcorn. For more information, visit the Bagdad website.

• The Greek Festival is happening all weekend at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Folk dancing, food, children's activities, and cooking demonstrations. 10:00 am to 10:00 pm on Friday and Saturday; noon to 8:00 pm on Sunday.

Looking for some inexpensive fun next weekend? Here's your to-do list.

Friday, Oct 5: Attend the HP Lovecraft Film Festival at the Hollywood Theater. If you try to keep Portland weird, then this is your scene. In the early 20th century, Lovecraft wrote a series of strange and horrific stories that influenced writers like Stephen King, Neil Gaiman and Michael Chabon. The Festival presents a variety of professional and amateur Lovecraftian films on three screens. Get there at seven for the Cthulhu blessing. If you want to try before you buy, read At the Mountains of Madness or Cthulhu 2000, a collection of stories inspired by Lovecraft. The Festival runs Friday through Sunday night.

Saturday, Oct 6: Attend the Friends of the Library Book Sale at 3016 SE Division (the former Wild Oats.) This sale features tens of thousands of books for as little as a dollar. These aren't crummy cast-offs either, these books are donated by your book-loving Portland neighbors, so the selection is excellent. You might want to give yourself a limit on how much you can buy. Mine is the amount I can comfortably carry. Sale starts on Friday for members ($30 at the door) and is free for all starting Saturday.

Sunday, Oct 7: Head to Burnside Powells at 7:30PM to see three small-press book authors from Akashic books. Chris Abani (Song For Night,) Joe Meno (Tender as Hellfire,) and Felicia Luna Lemus ( Like Son,) will read from their books and take questions. Akashic's mission is the "reverse gentrification of literature," and the subject matter, which includes Nigerian child soldiers, alienated youth and gender identity, reflects it. Here's your chance to meet some new authors.
