Sept 15: Portland's mini-version of Paris-Roubaix, sans cobblestones

Man, Saturday is turning out to be a jam-packed day!

Out on Sauvie Island there is going to be a bike race. WOO HOO!

This will NOT be your usual downtown crit. Except for racers doing multiple laps around a relatively compact course, everything will be different! The race will probably feel more like a fast and non-technical cyclocross race over hard-packed farm roads, featuring some potholes, some ruts, a sprinkle of gravel, a bit of sand, and depending on the weather, possibly some mud.

According to the National Weather Service there is a slight chance of rain on Saturday. Bring on the RAIN!

The picture is of Roger de Vlaeminck riding on the cobblestones! Now, neither Mr. Vlaeminck (a.k.a Mr. Paris-Roubaix) nor the cobblestones will be there this Saturday but this race will be a nice appetizer for cyclocross season in a few weeks.

Vice Magazine, home of the scathing Dos and Don'ts feature among other sarcasm-laden cultural commentary tidbits, is hosting (in conjunction with Dewar's) the kickoff event for the 2007 Bicycle Film Festival this Thursday, September 6th at Holocene. The evening will start off with a debate entitled “Bikes or Cars?” followed by music from Flosstradamus and DJ Beyonda. The debate will begin at 8:30, but Dewar's will be pouring complimentary cocktails starting at 7:30.

I attended the Debate Club co-sponsored by the Portland Mercury and the Bus Project last month (topic: Bikes vs. Cars) at rontoms, and, as you might imagine, it was very much a pro-bike affair; considering the fact that the car-friendly camp was 50% represented by Mel Zucker of the Oregon Transportation Institute, an old-guard type armed with arguments based on utterly irrelevant statistics, the panel was hardly balanced.

The Bus Project has not yet announced the topic for September's Debate Club, but the August forum on gentrification was sufficiently lively to compel me to encourage anyone with even a shred of interest in local goings-on to attend future events. The Vice shindig promises “two masters of argumentation,” setting the bar rather high, but hey, even if the discussion is weak and the point-making is flimsy, there's going to be FREE BOOZE.

Breathing in exhaust fumes & extremely loud noise = my I-205 Bridge Biking Experience

I realized about halfway to Washington on the I-205 bridge bike path that I wasn't having much fun.

My girlfriend and I decided it would be a fun idea to bike from Oregon to Washington on the I-205 bike bridge this weekend. So we strapped our bikes to the car, drove to Sandy Blvd, then began our I-205 bridge biking experience.

And oh, what an experience it was… an experience in breathing in car exhaust, my girlfriend having to stop and sit down to breathe & deafening car / motorcycle noise that we had to yell to one another.

So if you're ever thinking of biking the I-205 bridge… here's a warning: it's pretty cool to tell your friends you've biked across the bridge, but if you do it you probably will never want to bike it ever again.

Challenge yourself to rediscover the benefits of biking to work – and of friendly competition for a good cause – by joining in the 2007 Bike Commute Challenge, our annual month-long bike-to-work competition for Oregon and SW Washington workplaces.

It starts September 1st and runs for the whole month. Last year more than 6,000 people took the Challenge, and this year we want 7,000 people to take the Challenge with us! You can help by signing yourself up, and by signing up a friend.

If your company is already registered, contact your coordinator for the company code, and then register. If your company is not on the list (companies registered last year have been archived), go ahead and register it yourself.

Here are a couple of updates for 2007:

Raffles: There will be a raffle on September 14th for all bikers who have logged at least two trips; another on September 21st for all bikers who have logged at least five trips; separate raffles for the different geographic areas of Oregon and SW Washington on September 30th for all bikers who have logged at least one trip; and a raffle at the After Party for attendees. Raffle prizes include hotel stays, movie passes, ride registrations, meals, coffee, bike stuff, BTA gear, and more. Details for each raffle will be posted the week before.

The After Party: It will be from 6-7 pm on Thursday, October 4th, at a Portland location to be determined, sponsored by Widmer Brothers Brewing and Hot Lips Pizza. A great after-work reward for your team!

The Challenge Mixer: Join BTA staff and Challenge participants in Portland on Tuesday, September 18th, at the McMenamins Market St. Pub (1526 SW 10th Ave.) from 5:00 – 8:00 pm for a Challenge mixer. This is a great opportunity to connect with other bicyclists, pick up maps, ask for commuting advice, and find out about our advocacy work. Plus, one-half of all purchases from 5:00 pm to 1:00 am go to support the BTA and the Bike Commute Challenge. Hope we'll see you there!

On-site workshops: Thanks to presenting sponsors Metro and OHSU, we can offer more on-site workshops than ever (in the metro-area only, but we can help with non-metro-area workshops as well). Contact us for more info.

Discounts: This year, riders with a tally card showing seven bike trips can get a 10% discount on gear and parts at participating bike shops from September 15th through October 15th.
