THE ART OF NICHOLAS GUREWITCH & TONY MILLIONAIRE

This April, artists Nicholas Gurewitch and Tony Millionaire are brought together for one exciting exhibition. On April 3rd, 2008 Floating World Comics and Dark Horse Comics are proud to present the art of Gurewitch's Perry Bible Fellowship and Millionaire's Sock Monkey. Both comic strips have been featured in alternative weekly newspapers all over the world and are collected in book form by Dark Horse Comics.

Original art will be available for view and sale from both artists. Gurewitch will also be producing dozens of oversized prints of his favorite Perry Bible Fellowship strips which will also be on display and available for sale. The art opening is on First Thursday, April 3rd. Nicholas will appear in person on Last Thursday, April 24th at the store from 7-9PM.

Nicholas Gurewitch attended New York's Syracuse University, where he
studied film and where his comic strip was first published in The Daily
Orange. The Perry Bible Fellowship has received eight awards in various
categories over the history of the strip.

The dark, surreal humor of Perry Bible Fellowship is often compared to The
Far Side but has an even more brutal and fatalistic sense of humor.
Lavishly colored, the art switches among detailed depictions of comedy
staples like sloths and dinosaurs to an empty-faced cast of doomed stick
figure dreamers. Gurewitch's true strength is in expertly using the
four-panel comic strip structure to suggest entire storylines and their
bleak payoffs. It has achieved a cult following both online and through
weekly appearances in newspapers and magazines worldwide. The Dark Horse
hardcover collection, The Trial of Colonel Sweeto and other Stories, was
one of their fastest selling graphic novel collections and has already
gone into 3 printings.

“Nick Gurewitch's strip is one of the few strips that makes me laugh out
loud. It's really funny and if newspapers still cared about funny strips,
he'd be in more papers, as he should. Except if they bump mine for him."
-Tony Millionaire

“Gurewitch's “Perry Bible Fellowship” is a weird mix of sharp and clever
gag writing with a hippy-trippy visual sensibility. Go figure! It also
keeps getting better and better . . . " -Peter Bagge

“A work of sheer brilliance” -Jim Woodring

“PBF is hilarious and fu**ed-up in a very sublime way.” -Scott McCloud

“If Rod Serling had a sense of humor and an illustration degree, this
would be his comic strip.” -Tom Brazelton (Theater Hopper)

Tony Millionaire is an oddity in the world of comics. There are people who
would say he's an oddity no matter what world you call home, but his work
in the field of comic books and comic strips truly sets this enigmatic
artist and storyteller apart from the rest.

For the last ten years, Dark Horse has published an amazing little gem of
a comic called Sock Monkey, which focuses on the adventures of a sock
monkey named Uncle Gabby and his inebriated stuffed-toy friend, Mr. Crow,
as they innocently wreak havoc on the world around them in a never-ending
search for adventure and excitement. It's part children's fantasy, part
surreal philosophy, and part grim, gothic fairy tale, all lovingly
embellished in Millionaire's signature Victorian illustrative style.

The Foxgloves
Portland sweethearts flying high. Melodious, raw, kinda 60's girl group-ish but… one of them's A GUY. Back after a short break. Not to miss.
The Paper Dolls
“Seattle based quintet possesses a natural gift for American-minted, and historically accurate rock'n'roll of the glorious three chord variety. On the handclap-happy “What You Told Me”, the Paper Dolls come off like drunk cheerleaders gone wrong, hopped up on goofballs and hitting the makeout trail with the Heartbreakers stuffed in the backseat. Like the Sirens or the Gore-Gore Girls, it's a college punk party sound; as old as the Kingsmen and as right as a lampshade on your head.” [Nerve]

This January Floating World Comics is proud to present a varied group show with some of the town's best and brightest new artists, painters and illustrators. In order to find a connecting thread between all these artists, I came up with the theme “A LIFE IN PICTURES” which they were asked to interpret however they liked. To get things rolling I invited them all to watch the Stanley Kubrick documentary with the same name, “A LIFE IN PICTURES”. I instructed the artists that the show did not necessarily have to be Kubrick themed. But rather, I found the documentary to be very inspiring and it rejuvenated my creative spirit. It reminded me why good art is so important to me. I hoped that the experience would have a similar and unifying effect if the artists in the show watched it as well.

So please join us this First Thursday, January 3rd to view the results!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

THE INTELLIGENCE

The Intelligence's Lars Finberg is unstoppable and responsible for some of the best music blasting out of the underground. He's a massive, pulsating, purple, brain squirting out bands like it was as easy as making a baby. Lars structures the A-Frames post-apocalyptic pop world where we all learned to dance on the heads of nuked, mutilated bodies. Then there's the Dipers, where he throws down that low-fi noisy rumble of burning trash and car wreck rock wiping the shit blood all over yr blue suede shoes. Intelligence combines the best of all worlds in an eight-track wonderland of sonic horizons, poppy dance field rock and if ya have time to think – brilliant lyrics. Intelligence utilize melodic acoustic guitars with wire cutting electric riffs, crushed keyboards, jumping jack fun drums and sing along vocal melodies. The recording sounds like they crawl inside a beat up trashcan to bang out the hits while tumbling down a granite mountain covered in volcanic ash. So, get smart son. Do the Intelligence thing and get into that chicken grip groove.

http://www.myspace.com/theworldisadrag

 FIST FITE

Though some of Fist Fite's keyboard sounds are damn close to bleeps from the original Legend of Zelda, this is not a two-bit eight-bit band. Vocalist Jonnie Monroe slides effortlessly from seductive chirp to rock howl, all while doing a spazzy tap dance across the stage. And Christian Carmine's pummeling of the boom booms has enough punch to make you blink on beat and a fluidity yet unmatched by any machine. (willamette week)Â This is Fist Fite's first Portland show after a long European tour with Klaxons.

http://www.myspace.com/fistfitefistfite

Â

REVERSE DOTTY & THE CANDY CANE SHIVS

Reverse Dotty and the Candy Cane Shivs are energetic danceable electro pop. Heavy on the beats which makes it easy to dance and bob around. Having only been around for about a year their songs are hilarious yet tightly arranged.
