This year's eclectic mix of dry British comedy, cinematic bravura, hard-hitting PSA's and new twists on long-running campaigns is highlighted by Sony's famed “exploding paint” commercial; a piece of computer-generated trickery that places Elvis Presley on the same stage as The Sugababes; and Marvin Gaye, Sheryl Crow, and Stevie Wonder describing the daily output of a BBC radio station.

Few who read newspapers, books, ads or even film subtitles are consciously aware of the typefaces employed. But as Hustwit's fascinating film connects the worlds of design, advertising, psychology, and communication, it invites a second look at the thousands of words we see every day.

Focusing on the proliferation of Helvetica, the ubiquitous Swiss typeface created in 1957 that started a design revolution, Hustwit examines the larger context of how type affects our lives and experiences, and the creative process and aesthetic choices behind the use of type. Interviewing the range of early champions and subsequent generations of postmodernist designers who rejected the conformity it engendered, HELVETICA offers unique social history of global visual culture that is full of discovery.
