Portland’s annual Mardi Gras Ball has been listed by the New Orleans Times-Picayune as one of the Top-5 most authentic Mardi Gras celebrations in the United States outside of Louisiana. And it is no surprise given the event’s origins – produced since 2011 by the Mysti Krewe of Nimbus – a NOLA-style social club founded by ex-Louisiana residents and others that now counts more than 100 members in Portland. This is a critical mass of Louisiana revelry with full costume finery – the crazy, the macabre, the funny, the sexy, the rude – and high-spirited indulgence.

Because the Ball has sold out in advance the past several years, for 2017 the Mysti Krewe of Nimbus has moved the event from the Wonder Ballroom to an even larger space: downtown’s Tiffany Center Emerald Ballroom (1410 SW Morrison St.), which has the added benefit of nearby MAX service. Revelers are definitely encouraged to buy tickets early!

Also this year, in keeping with the theme of “Fire on the Bayou” (based on the famous song by The Meters) online ticket purchasers may select an optional donation to the Wetlands Conservancy in Oregon and the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program in Louisiana which each work to support vital wetlands restoration and preservation.

In addition to the Ball on February 18, Portlanders are invited to join the Mysti Krewe of Nimbus on Fat Tuesday Evening – February 28th, 2017 – for the annual free, family-friendly Mardi Gras Day Parade down Mississippi Avenue.

Performers for the 2017 Portland Mardi Gras Ball include: the Northside Skull and Bones Gang; the Too Loose Cajun and Zydeco Band; BrassRoots Movement; and an All-Star Funk Revue featuring LaRhonda Steele, Karen Lovely, Christopher Worth, Michael Quinby, Dan Berkery, Chuk Barber, and Steve Kerin.

Like the gumbo Yaya once said, “yeah you right now!” Bubbling up from the streets with sound. Brass, funk, blues, soul. That is what it’s all about. How much fun would that be. Putting on my suit getting on your purple and gold and sitting down there enjoying your time with some wonderful sounds and some good vibes. Hope to see you down there. Yeah you right! This one’s for my buddy Paul Ronin!

  51. Cori T February 15, 2017 at 8:19 am #

I would love to give tickets to my neighbor. He keeps talking about it.

  52. Kathy Rankin February 15, 2017 at 12:06 pm #

I went on the blues cruise on the spirit of Portland during the blues festival one time and that spurred me into action! I then went on the legendary rhythm & Blues cruise. SO I feel..that if
I was so lucky to win 2 tickets (taking hubby) would inspire him to wanna go to New Orleans,
eat creole, do the mardis gras, shop and sightsee, visit alligators, I know this is not the case in the prize, it is a show in Portland, but I have missed all the shows here and now I realize I best go so I can get a real glimpse of what New Orleans is like….I would love to catch a handful of beads, dance, eat jambalaya and mingle with the Saints! This would be a real colorful way to spend a cold night in Portland. I hope I am chosen because I haven’t been out for a long time, been hibernating and would like the Louisiana Heat!!! Pick up we need to shake a tail feather!

  53. Stacy J February 16, 2017 at 12:31 pm #
