Tropitaal A Desi-Latino Soundclash

with hosts and resident DJs Anjali and The Incredible Kid

and special guest Maga Bo (Rio de Janeiro/USA/Trans-National Afro-Brazilian Bass/Kafundó Records)

Anjali and The Incredible Kid just won BEST DJ in Willamette Week’s Best of Portland Readers’ Poll 2016.

Take the sultry vibe of the Latin American Tropics, combine with the rhythm of India (“Taal”) and stir into Tropitaal, a Desi/Latino Soundclash where the hottest club sounds from India and Latin America go head to head in an all-night dance-off of epic proportions. Resident DJs Anjali & The Incredible Kid combine their deep passions and deep crates from across the spectrum of Latin, Indian and Caribbean vibes. (We are not talking Salsa, but Reggaeton, Moombahton, Digital Cumbia, 3Ball Guarachero, Dembow and more.)

“On his new album, Quilombo do Futuro, vibrating strings, booming drumheads and vocal melodies that might go back centuries coexist with rhythmic sound eects and club-friendly beat…..Maga Bo denes a kind of virtual refuge for traditional culture, giving it a welcome place in the techy global music soundscape of the 21st century.”
– NPR, All Things Considered

Spanning the breadth of international urban bass music, Maga Bo’s work makes connections between the organic and the electronic, the traditional and the avant-garde and the local with the global. In his live performances, original productions and remixes from his far reaching creative collaborations take new forms mixed live, often with the participation of MCs and live musicians. Direct, in-person, on-location collaboration with other artists has been paramount in his work, having participated in artistic residencies in Morocco, India, Ethiopia, Senegal, Zanzibar, South Africa to name a few.

There are no canned samples here – all instruments and vocals come straight from the source. His current work is decidedly afro-brazilian oriented and includes collaborations with some of Brazil’s brightest talents – from BNegão and Marcelo Yuka to Grupo Bongar and Samba de Coco Raízes de Arcoverde. His studio work and live performances are informed by the philosophies of hip hop and dub on a fundamental level. Adding and subtracting elements dub-wise in the same way that as artist might work with positive and negative space.

Inspired by hip hop and sound system culture, the recontextualizion of riddims and sounds is enriched by the presence of live vocalists and percussion. Working with layers of sounds, it’s not only rhythm or harmony, but juxtapositions and textures that give this work a depth rarely seen in electronic music today. Maga Bo has performed in India to Ethiopia to Brazil to major summer festivals across Europe to touring North America and Australia. He has performed at the WOMAD UK, WorldWide, Sydney Festival, WOMEX, Transmediale and Mundial.
