Umphrey’s McGee

After 17-plus years of performing more than 100 concerts annually, releasing eight studio albums and selling more than 3.5 million tracks online, Umphrey’s McGee might be forgiven if they chose to rest on their laurels. But then that wouldn’t be consistent with the work ethic demonstrated by the band, which consistently attempts to raise the bar, setting and achieving new goals since forming on the Notre Dame campus in South Bend, Indiana, in 1997. After releasing their eighth studio album, Similar Skin, the first for their own indie label, Nothing Too Fancy (N2F) Music (distributed by RED), the group continue to push the envelope and test the limits. Their brand-new studio album, The London Session, was a dream come true for the members having been recorded at the legendary Studio Two at historic Abbey Road. The stealth recording session yielded 10 tracks in a single day, proving once again, the prolific UM waits for no one.

The original Umphrey’s McGee played a mix of originals and cover songs, waiting just eight months to release their debut album, the cheekily titled Greatest Hits Volume III. Their initial “proper” recording, Local Band Does OK, came out in 2002, followed shortly afterward by an appearance at the first-ever Bonnaroo in Tennessee, selling more albums than any other band on the bill. The 2007 double album, Live at the Murat, earned a four-star review in Rolling Stone and a Jammy for Best Live Album.

TAUK is heavy instrumental rock fusion created by Matt Jalbert (guitar), Charlie Dolan (bass), Alric “A.C.” Carter (keyboard-organ), and Isaac Teel (drums). The transcendent instrumental band seamlessly brings together genres as diverse as melodic rock, fusion, gritty funk, progressive rock, ambient, classic rock, hip hop and jazz.

The Oyster Bay, New York-based quartet has received accolades from a number of tastemaking authorities, including an “On The Verge” feature in Relix Magazine and frequent rotation for the singles “Mindshift”, “Sweet Revenge”, “Dead Signal” and “In the Basement of the Alamo” on Sirius XM Jam On. Despite their years of experience as a musical unit, the quartet is a young promising band that Jambase calls “a guaranteed quickly-ascend band.” The Washington Post describes the band by saying: “TAUK’s instrumental music melds genres and styles, creating a hard-charging, often melodic fusion that – thanks to a penchant for improv – offers limitless possibilities” and The Deli Magazine singles out the band’s compelling melodic sense through explaining: “the quartet has a rare ability to channel emotional melodic leads, and all without a lead singer.”

Don’t know how they stay so consistent musically. Actually it’s because they’re all great musicians that feed off each other. Thanks for the opportunity.

A chance to win tix to see Umphrey’s McGee?
    A band that I’ve liked since 2003!
And all one must do is “post comment below”
Which might allow two of us to go see their show!

The venue, I’ve heard, is the one with the floor
That bounces when Umphrey’s stops on their tour
As the crowd gets all googly with the lights in their eyes
And the speakers on eleven – amplifying those guys

It’s Joel on the keyboards, and Ryan on bass
Brendan, Jake on guit box are all over the place
Kris Myers and Andy build the beat from the back
This band is the best – it’s not talent they lack

So by posting this comment, I am hoping beyond measure
That the tickets are mine to allow me the pleasure
To see Umphrey’s this weekend (on Sunday, it seems)
Thanks PDX Pipeline! As the grantor of dreams!!!

Humphrey’s is a great show and my boyfriend favorite band. I’d love to win some tickets and surprise him. We could use a good jam and dance night.
