The Astoria Music Festival will celebrate its Twelfth Anniversary from June 13 to June 29, 2014, with a major increase in concerts and activity in the past two years. More than 100 performers and students will gather in historic Astoria, Oregon for 23 performances of symphonic and chamber music, educational events, and four operas.

Board of Directors President Diane Tiedeman states “We are excited to present the biggest and most challenging festival in our short twelve-year history. Our Artistic Director Keith Clark has assembled a remarkable roster of international artists repertoire. We invite music lovers to visit our scenic town to experience our motto: Big City Music – Small Town Prices – Victorian Charm.

Vocal highlights include appearances by acclaimed American sopranos, including Metropolitan Opera sensation ANGELA MEADE as Violetta in Verdi’s LA TRAVIATA, AMBER WAGNER opens our Strauss Celebration with the composer’s FOUR LAST SONGS, and San Francisco and Seattle Operas’ MARIE PLETTE in the title role of Strauss’s ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, an opera not heard in Oregon for nearly fifty years. The opening Festival Weekend will conclude with the moving Final Trio of Strauss’s DER ROSENKAVALIER, a masterpiece for three female voices.

The Festival will observe the 150th Anniversary of Richard Strauss’s birth with performances of operatic, symphonic, and chamber works. The performance of his opera ARIADNE AUF NAXOS will be preceded by settings of the ancient Ariadne myth by Monteverdi, Locatelli, Conradi, Haydn and Stephen Sondheim.

Members of the Festival’s APPRENTICE VOCAL ARTISTS PROGRAM will be featured in West Coast Premieres of two recently rediscovered operatic works: a fully staged production of COSI FAN TUTTE by Mozart and concert excerpts from THE BEAUTIFUL AND TRUE ARIADNE, a little-known North German High Baroque setting of the Ariadne story by Johann Georg Conradi, performed in collaboration with the Boston Early Music Festival.
