Mochitsuki is Portland’s annual Japanese New Year celebration. From enjoying special foods to watching traditional mochi pounding, Mochitsuki has been a premiere event in the local Japanese American community since 1996.

The mission is to celebrate, share, and educate the broader community about the dynamic Nikkei New Years traditions while strengthening bonds between our Nikkei groups.

Enjoy free mochi samples, demonstrations and hands-on activities for all ages including: mochi pounding, ikebana, calligraphy, games and much more!

This year Mochitsuki will feature open seating in the auditorium. Seats will be available on a first come first served basis. Please be respectful of performers as you enter and exit the auditorium.

My friend in Japan came to visit Portland last fall and I plan to go there in a few years, but I’d like to attend the Mochitsuki celebration in the meantime, taking pictures and videos and showing my friend how the Japanese community here celebrates the new year!     I have a co-worker who is very interested in Japanese culture, so I will ask her to go if I win the tickets, and I’m very interested in the culture too. Had a Japanese exchange student living with us a couple of years ago and it was a nice experience. Leared a lot about the culture, but would love to experience more.
