The final month of the Portland Timbers inaugural season in Major League Soccer was a tumultuous one. Coming within a few scant points of the playoffs, the Timbers had one of the most impressive debut campaigns put forward by a MLS expansion team. Despite the successes of the previous year, as of the final minute of their last game of the season in the midst of the mountains surrounding Real Salt Lake’s Rio Tinto Stadium the Timbers were looking forward to the next season, looking to make it bigger and more successful both on and off the field.
On the field the Timbers came together as a team, improving their defense from one of the league’s worst in their early showings into a stout unit that allowed only 17 goals in the second half of the season. At the other end of the pitch, the Timbers played exciting, attacking but somewhat ineffective soccer, taking the game to their opponents but struggling to find a consistent scoring touch.
