A People’s History of Oregon” is a new series of work that represents Chris Haberman’s experience, research, oral history and tall tales about Oregon. Haberman attempts to bridge the gap between the facts and fables of Oregon’s rich historical and cultural heritage by examining the authority of history with local folklore.

This exhibition portrays Haberman’s perception of Oregon’s cultural landscape from Paleolithic times and Native American heritage to pioneer development and modern Oregon. On May 9, 1934, thousands of longshoremen along the West Coast walked off the job, beginning an eighty-two-day standoff between the International Longshoreman’s Association (ILA) and company owners.

In Portland, the strike split the city in two: sympathetic citizens rallied around the workers, offering food, shelter, and transportation; those opposed to the strike—including Henry Corbett, Amedee Smith, and Henry Cabell—formed the Citizens Emergency Committee and called on President Roosevelt to stop the strike with federal troops. The Oregon Symphony presents the first of the season’s Kids Concerts!

Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf comes alive with popular local performer and narrator Pamela Mahon in a special concert designed for the young people in your life. And that’s not all. Peter and the Wolf is joined with other musical tales, including danced excerpts from Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite.
