Portland First Thursday 25th Anniversary: 50+ Art Openings & Events | October 2011

First Thursday @ Everett Station Lofts, Portland, OregonPortland’s monthly First Thursday event is tomorrow night! It’s quite special this month, since it marks the 25th anniversary of the event.

From Portland Business Journal:
First Thursday began in 1986, when the Pearl District was full of abandoned warehouses left over from its industrial past.

Gallery owners were among the Pearl’s only full-time businesses when the neighborhood’s industrial tenants closed their doors in the mid-1980s. As prominent developer Mark Edlen and city leaders plotted ways to build the Pearl, First Thursday was already attracting thousands of visitors to the neighborhood. Continue reading here.

—————————————

The weather will be rather nice for October (no rain, 60 degrees) and thousands of people will be out and enjoying the art and events. There are over 50 (probably 100) galleries having openings this month, with most openings taking place in the Pearl district and Old Town/China Town.

We have a very large list below thanks to Sequential Art Gallery (328 NW Broadway). They compile an email called the “[h]IT LIST” of events every month. You can join it by emailing them @ sequentialart @ gmail dot com. We have reproduced much of it below with permission.

Are you on the Twitter? Follow @FirstThursday or the #firstthursday hashtag to see what people are posting about it. You can also follow Sequential art on twitter: @sequentialart

Every so often, Chad VanGaalen emerges from his bunker in Calgary with a batch of songs, giving us a window into the the private world of this reclusive and enigmatic songwriter. With his latest album, Diaper Island, VanGaalen distills his approach, producing his most sonically cohesive album to date — and the closest thing he has done to a rock album.

While VanGaalen’s three previous albums were made in a cramped basement studio, a move to a larger recording room offered space to develop and refine his sound. Fresh from producing Women’s critically lauded Public Strain, Read the rest of this entry »
