Great picture of Belmont Street fair street park setup. This year’s fest should be even better than previous years with the addition of Circa 33, Straight From New York Pizza, and Sweet Hereafter moving to the 34th block. After you go this fair, you’ll wonder why they don’t always shut down SE Belmont to cars/buses between 33rd & 37th…it just feels right.

David Koechner @ Helium Comedy Club | Anchorman, The Office, The Naked Trucker

By Nathalie Weinstein
David Koechner @ Helium Comedy ClubDavid Koechner’s face should be familiar to you by now. After a breakout performance as sports reporter Champ Kind in Anchorman, he has gone on to have supporting roles in over 20 films in addition to a recurring role on NBC’s The Office.

But that’s not enough for a man who is always on the lookout for the odd and the strange in comedy. For the last couple years, he has been testing the waters of stand-up comedy and also has a new variety show with comic Dana Gould called Carnyville, which he describes as his way of ‘embracing the odd’.

He’ll be here in Portland this week at Helium Comedy Club Thursday September 8 through Saturday, September 10. We were fortunate enough to get a few minutes with David before he heads north to Stumptown from Los Angeles.

PDX Pipeline: How is doing stand-up different performance-wise than working on a film or TV show?

David Koechner: Stand up is a personal take on comedy, whether you are being vulnerable or not. It’s your take on life and what you think is funny. The way it’s different is usually you’re generating your own material. In a movie you’re not directing, you’re servicing someone else’s purpose. When you act, you’re acting out something someone has written. In stand-up, you act out your own thoughts.

Blitzen TrapperWith a yet another new album out on September 13th and sitting on the cusp of a nationwide tour, its a rare moment when Blitzen Trapper gets to play a set in its hometown of Portland. The band has gone from self-releasing its first three albums to being on the tongues of every major music critic, from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork.

But that doesn’t mean lead singer/songwriter Eric Earley isn’t enjoying his summer like any other Oregonian, lazing around the river and playing bar gigs with his other band, Denver.  Blitzen Trapper will headline a show at the Crystal Ballroom for MusicFest NW on Friday, September 9 and play a free show at Music Millennium Monday, September 12, so there is plenty of opportunity to catch these homegrown rockers before they head out on tour in October.

Earley had a few minutes between river trips to catch up with Pipeline this week.

PDX Pipeline: Are you from Portland originally?

Eric Earley: I’m originally from Salem then moved to Portland. It’s the city you live in if you live in Oregon.

PDX: Is there another PDX band that you admire/think is up and coming?

EE: There are a lot of great bands (in Portland). The Fruit Bats are really good.  So are Alela Diane.  There’s lots of good stuff. Read the rest of this entry »

Hot Nights/Warm Coats 4 is a 3-day FREE hip-hop festival/coat drive benefiting ImpactNW.

It is our belief that one of the major obstacles to a childs academic success is self-esteem issues. We feel that something as simple as a “gently used” winter coat can be the difference between a child feeling confident enough to stay in school, and one feeling uncomfortable enough to drop out.

We will be showcasing over two dozen of Portland’s brightest hiphop acts over the 3 day period as incentive for you to come out and donate.
