Eleven years ago, Portland, Oregon was a sleepy burg, and MusicfestNW was little more than a hope and a prayer—a hope of putting on a music festival that matched the outsized ambitions of the alt-weekly that founded it and a prayer that the wheels wouldn’t fall off. Today, Portland is one of the most exciting cities on the globe. And MusicfestNW has become the third largest indoor music festival in the United States.

Time magazine dubbed our festival one of 50 Authentic American Experiences of 2009. MusicfestNW is not just about the hottest music; it’s also become the perfect platform for companies seeking to engage consumers and give them an experience like no other.

“The Northwest has always been on the cutting edge when it comes to music, and here’s your chance to find out why.”—Time.com

Just the Facts: MFNW is produced by Willamette Week, Portland’s Pulitzer Prize-winning alt-weekly newspaper. WW not only covers culture, it creates it. Each week, a quarter million people read the paper and its website, and for months preceding MFNW, Willamette Week puts its broad shoulders firmly behind the festival.

In 2010 MFNW showcased more than 170 bands across 18 venues including the brand new outdoor venue, Levi’s Pioneer Stage at Pioneer Courthouse Square. More than 20,000 fans danced and sweated to performances by The National, The Decemberists, Major Lazer, Panda Bear, Okkervil River, Wiz Khalifa, The Smashing Pumpkins and Black Lips.

In 2011, MFNW will be taking over the city. See you September 7th through September 11th.

Formed in 2003, Ivan Neville”s Dumpstaphunk was initially put together by keyboardist Ivan Neville on a whim in order to perform a solo gig at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Ivan called in cousin Ian Neville (guitar), the double-bass bottom of both Nick Daniels and Tony Hall, and drummer Raymond Weber to round out the show.

Named after a song Ivan had recently written, Dumpstaphunk’s informal performance became that of immediate legend. The project has since grown from chance side-project into what is now widely considered to be New Orleans’ most popular musical export. The band was recently voted 2007′s “New Orleans Best Funk Band” by both Read the rest of this entry »

Some of the PacNW’s most talented heavy psychedelic musicians perform in collaboration with dancers, video artists, and (wearable) sculpture artists for a sustained experiment in meditative rituals. We hope for a trance-inducing feast for the eyes, ears, and spirit.

INTUITIVE NAVIGATION invites like-minded performers from Portland and Seattle to transform the atmosphere of Holocene into a hypnotic, self-reflective zone. Five bands will showcase the spectrum of possibility found in psychedelic music while focusing on one central goal: to unite concertgoers in a similar consciousness of meditative bliss.

With their seventh home win of the season coming against their rivals from Vancouver, the Portland Timbers still have hope to reach the playoffs. Their opponents this week, Chivas USA, are also within striking distance of the final playoff spot and a win for the Timbers would be a huge blow to them. This game is the quintessential six-pointer as both teams need to win in order to grab the last playoff berth.

Against the Whitecaps on Saturday the Timbers looked rejuvenated after struggling more and more each match during their three game road trip that saw them take only one point from the nine on offer. They will need to bring that same renewed energy to the pitch against Chivas if they want to take the full three points and Read the rest of this entry »

What began as an ode to some of the organ greats in soul jazz, such as delivering their own take on the works of Jimmy Smith and Captain Jack McDuff, soon turned into something more. A movement towards being a band that can appeal to almost any audience, room, and vibe.

Melody, dynamics, and groove from the soft and surreal to deep funk. From swinging soul all the way to the thumping metal grind, Read the rest of this entry »
