Portland Soap Box Derby Crash Videos & 2011 Info | Spectator Map, Volunteers, Race Slot, Youth Derby

Portland Adult Soap Box Derby
Mount Tabor Park
Portland, Oregon
Filmed by brewcaster
Music: ‘Frenzy’ By: Locust Avenue

The 2011 Portland Adult Soap Box Derby is next Saturday (August 13) at Mount Tabor Park. It is a huge event that everyone should check out at least once. Just like last year, there is also an after-party at Tonic Lounge where prizes will be rewarded, plus free beer and food for volunteers (volunteer info below). You are likely to see a few more crashes this year and NW Sports Guy explains why…

From NW Sports Guy (more videos & pictures on his site here):

In addition to poor construction, the vehicles most likely to crash have 1) poorly secured bicycle wheels 2) a high center of gravity and 3) high occupancy. Add in alcohol, a steep down grade and spectators throwing water balloons, and you get the perfect storm for destruction. In the above video, you can hear a water balloon impact against the soap box car, causing it to swerve and lose control. The spectator in the video wound up with a broken nose and was taken to the hospital. Good times had by all.

Eels are an indie rock band run by singer-songwriter Mark Oliver Everett. Everett, who more commonly goes by the name E, is the only permanent member of Eels, bringing in different collaborators for his rock and chamber-pop compositions.

Known for their spiky humor and confessional bent, E’s lyrics often touch on depression, doubt and mortality while at the same time offering glimpses of hope amidst the despair. Eels have had flashes of mainstream appeal, but largely they remain a critically acclaimed band with a strong cult following.
