The “Noon Tunes” free Pioneer Square concert series began yesterday. That makes three great ongoing free events in Portland along with Concerts in the Park and Movies in the Park. This is the 21st year of Noon Tunes and there are shows every Tuesday and Thursday. There will also be a “Taste of Portland Farmer’s Market” held from 11AM-2PM each Noon Tunes concert day. It’s normally not too crowded, so you can get a seat and good view even if you get there during the show. However, The Builders and Butchers are playing in August, so that should packed!

If the moniker for the combustible punk jazz trio The Dead Kenny Gs doesn’t say it all upon initial glance, a first listen to their new album Operation Long Leash quickly makes their intentions clear.

Saxophonist Skerik, bassist Brad Houser and drummer/percussionist Mike Dillon (3/4 of the legendary Critters Buggin’) are committed to musical subversion of the highest order. Exploring a muse obsession of musical styles and sonic colors, The Dead Kenny Gs have both the courage and the chops to realize their wildest aural fantasies. One moment they draw inspiration from punk legends The Minutemen, Read the rest of this entry »
