Portland Blues Festival – The Blues Cruise

I shot this video a few years ago from the Hawthorne Bridge and it looks like a fantastic party. I still haven’t been on one of these wonderful cruises, and they are almost all sold out except the July 3rd and 4th cruises. You can get tickets here. The weather looks perfect this weekend through Monday.

Coming off a four goal loss in Dallas, the Timbers desperately need a win after taking one point in the last five games. Hot off the heels of the release of their 2011 double disc compilation, PDX Pop Now! — Portland’s premier local music advocacy organization – has announced the schedule for the 8th annual festival. Portland’s favorite free all-ages music festival be will be held July 22-24 at Refuge PDX (116 SE Yamhill, Portland, OR 97214).

To kick off the 2011 PDX Pop Now! Festival weekend, PDX Pop Now! is partnering with RACC as the featured non-profit for the July 21st ArtSpark! Come learn about opportunities to get involved with PDX Pop Now! throughout the year at this free, all-ages event at Backspace from 5-7pm. Take part in a Portland trivia game for the chance to win a PDX Pop Now! t-shirt or 40-track Compilation. Then stick around for rock-pop experience of Portland’s own Rocky and the Proms!

July 4th is Monday and there will be many places in Portland and Oregon to watch fireworks + Vancouver, Washington. Unfortunately, the loss of the Portland Beavers appears to have ended PGE Park’s (now Jeld Wen Field) fireworks display, which was one of the best.

Portland’s Last Thursday returns tomorrow evening and as we reported last month, there is a new organization working with the city and businesses on Alberta to organize the event. They are the “Friends of Last Thursday” and have sent us tips and info for tomorrow’s event.

2011 Info and Tips (from Friends of Last Thursday):

• Street Closure: Alberta street is closed for Last Thursday.
• Parking: Parked on Alberta Street? Cars need to get off the street by 5pm.
• Trimet: Bus reroutes are in effect from 6-11pm on Alberta. Catch the bus at stops on Killingsworth instead.
• Vendors: please keep 9′ distance from dotted yellow line, and wait til 6pm to set up in the street. Parking lanes ok after 5!
• Food vendors: Applications are available at FoLT booth, between 19th and 20th
• Info Booth: The info booth is located between 19th and 20th. Come visit us and find out how to get involved! #lastthursday
• Noise & Boomboxes: Be respectful with that boombox! Sound during Last Thursday should not carry more than half a block. A noise ticket could cost you $500.
• Bathrooms: Potties are located at SE corners of 29th, 26th, 24th, 22nd, 20th & 17th and Alberta.
• Trash: Last Thursday is a leave no trace event. Pick up after yourself. Trash stations are located at every intersection
• Support: Consider donating to Friends of Last Thursday. They have a booth between 19th n 20th. Thanks!
• Ambassadors: Last Thursday Ambassadors are located every two blocks. Got questions? Look for the orange-feathered hats and make sure to say hi!
• Open Containers: No open containers at Last Thursday.
• Fire: Fire spinners need permits. Applications are available at FoLT booth, between 19th and 20th.
• Closing Time: Alberta’s Last Thursday ends at 10pm.

2011 marks the 48th year of stunning fireworks at Fort Vancouver! This year is the sesquicentennial of the start of the Civil War, so added fun includes a visit from Abe Lincoln, a Civil War fashion show and black powder demonstrations. USA!

Independence Day at Fort Vancouver presented by Bank of America is Monday, July 4th at the Fort Vancouver National Site. Families will find a full slate of activities culminating with a spectacular fireworks show, the 48th July 4th event at Fort Vancouver. The event is produced by the nonprofit Fort Vancouver National Trust.

Featuring multiple entertainment venues, the July 4th event offers a variety of music, activities and fun for all ages. Most notably, the Heritage Stage presented by The Columbian commemorates the sesquicentennial of the start of the Civil War and features heritage fashion shows, black powder demonstrations, musical performances including Misty Mamas and even an appearance by Abe Lincoln. The nearby Hands-on-History Tent provides opportunities for visitors to learn handicrafts and games from the Civil War era.
