Win Tickets: Soul Stew 10th Anniversary Party ($20, April 22)
Soul Stew, Portland’s longest running dance party, is ten years old this Friday! The party at the Goodfoot Lounge will feature the Soul Stew DJ’s of past and present: DJ Aquaman, Mr. Funky, The Soul Mechanic, and Brad Vachal. Plus The Goodfoot B-Boys and Jennifer will be there too. Also, in their tradition of handing out trays of freshly baked treats as a show of affection, there will be an epic COOKIE-TIME, for all the late-night hungry dancers. To win, comment on this post why you would like to attend.

Win Tickets: Tiki Tease Time Burlesque Show & Party($40, April 22)
Miss Frankie Tease cordially invites you to experience some of Portland’s most talented TIKI performers Friday April 22, 9pm at the Tonic Lounge. Polynesian attire is requested. Siren of the Sea Clothing and Accessories, “Stanley’s” vintage polaroid photo booth, and a marketplace of tiki vendors will be on hand, each contributing to an exciting tiki themed raffle for the party. To win, comment on this post why you would like to attend.

Win Tickets: Tobacco w/ Beans, Shapers ($30, April 23)
Coming to Holocene this Saturday, Tobacco sometimes runs with a group called Black Moth Super Rainbow. With his Tobacco mission, he works alone. Tobacco’s tools are analog synths, tape machines, and deformed incantations from throats unknown. His music is a wash of distortion and melody over jagged beats. It amalgamates hypnotic, cosmopolitan pop, gritty, propulsive hip-hop and a night full of fevered dreams. To win, comment on this post why you would like to attend.

Win Tickets: Rose City Rollers vs Rat City ($40, April 23)
Portland’s 4 home teams take on Seattle’s home teams at the Memorial Coliseum.  If you weren’t able to make it up to Seattle in February to watch these teams face-off, you won’t want to miss the action here in Portland. Ladies, roller skates, and lots of bruises: what could be better? To win, comment on this post why you would like to attend.

Win Tickets: Sugarcane String Band w/ The Resolectrics,  Early Hours ($14, April 23)
The Goodfoot Lounge presents a triple bill of PDX favorites! Sugarcane headlines the evening with their high-energy (and critically acclaimed) blend of back porch blues, Americana and rock— with a touch of the Island vibe. Starting the night off is Early Hours (formerly Sudden Anthem), a band toeing the line between Indie and Americana with a strong original songbook and soaring harmonies. To win, comment on this post why you would like to attend.

Win Tickets: Dirty Beaches w/ The Reservations, Tunnels ($16, April 24)
The dark, ’50s-nostalgic avant-pop of Dirty Beaches stole our hearts at SXSW this year! Don’t miss the impressive live show from one of our favorite new acts. Dirty Beaches is the sound of waves against a picturesque and putrid shore, the silent rumble of a Chevy as it speeds by in slow motion. Sparse but condensed, relentlessly edging forward: this is music for locomotive travel, for racing your weary motorcycle through neon archways and into dusky tunnels. To win, comment on this post why you would like to attend.

Win Tickets: TEDx Portland ($90, April 30)
We have a pair of tickets to attend the SOLD OUT TEDx Portland conference next weekend. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Guest speakers include Spencer Beebe, president of EcoTrust, Karen Brooks, foodie and Portland Monthly author, and John Jay, executive creative director at Wieden + Kennedy. Entertainment will be provided by after-school music program School of Rock and college a cappella group On The Rocks. To win, comment on this post why you would like to attend.

Fruition is a blend of folk and bluegrass built on a platform of soul! And it’s excellent, too! Otis Heat brings a dose of psychedelic rock to the room thereafter! Less than 24 hours after being introduced to each other in early 2008, Fruition String Band knew that they’d be together for a long while. Three years, two albums and hundreds of performances later, that realization is stronger than ever. Mimi Naja, Jay Cobb Anderson, Keef Simon and Kellen Asebroek were destined, it seems, to be together.

As they continue to broaden their sonic and geographic horizons, the band stays true to their humble beginnings performing on the street. Fruition tours (or detours) are a mix of spontaneous street concerts, rowdy saloon hoedowns and all-night house parties. The band is becoming well known for their timeless brand of harmony-driven folk/soul string music.

Recent Los Angeles transplant Suzanne Kraft (aka Diego Herrera) has easily become NIGHTCLUBBING’S favorite new artist. His cosmic disco offerings sound like instrumental dubs of 80s radio dance hits blaring from the car stereo of the car from the video game Outrun. Phased guitar riffs, heavily reverbed synths and laid back hand claps all run through a sea of delay put Suzanne Kraft in the running with the best disco producers or our time. Don’t miss his live NIGHTCLUBBING debut!

DJ Mike M. (formerly known as DJ Sexy Cousin) is NIGHTCLUBBING’S favorite dj AND and favorite man. He plays all the best stuff. But if you’ve been to NIGHTCLUBBING recently you already know this. DISCOS DISCOS Dance Party info after the jump… Read the rest of this entry »

Born in Taiwan, Hungtai has made Toronto, Honolulu, Montreal, and Vancouver his homes.Like Bo Didley or minimalist synth provocateurs Suicide, Dirty Beaches’ compositions are not so much stripped down as refined to their essence. Drum loops entrance, Hungtai’s croon enchants, and the yearning melodies draped overtop belie as much a sense of haunting mystery as they do romanticism and wry humor.

A most appropriate bill for the day! Garcia Birthday Band keeps the spirit of Jerry alive with their loping, improv-laden rock ‘n’ roll, while Mars Retrieval Unit’s deep fusion of rock, electronica, jazz and more is accompanied by a fine psychedelic light show!

Described by many as a band where every member has equal shred capabilities, Mars Retrieval Unit brings it to the table with their fusion of spacey funk, rock and psychedelia. As a unit, MRU defines the word genre-hoppers, and leaves no musical rock unturned Read the rest of this entry »
