Portlanders are invited to honor military veterans, the active military and their families at the 36th annual Veterans Day Parade in the Hollywood District November 11, 2010. The parade begins at 9:45 a.m., and is sponsored by the Ross Hollywood Chapel. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki has designated Portland as a regional Veterans Day observance.

The parade begins at Northeast 40th Avenue and Northeast Hancock Street and travels east on Northeast Sandy Boulevard to Northeast 48th Avenue, where a memorial flag raising ceremony will be held.

This marks the first year 50 members of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America will march in the parade. Other participants will include marching bands, the historic horse-mounted Buffalo Soldiers Moses William Chapter of the 9th and 10th Calvary, military service organizations and marching bands. Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops will participate with parents and military veterans.

A memorial presentation at the Ross Hollywood Chapel, 4733 Northeast Thompson Street, will follow the parade. Along with other speakers, Edward Van Dyke, Portland claims manager, Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs, will speak about available veterans’ benefits. Covered seating will be available for seniors and those with disabilities.
