Big 100 Holiday Art Show & Benefit @ Goodfoot Lounge | First Thursday

Chis Haberman and Jason Brown are putting on the annual “The Big 100″ Holiday art show this First Thursday at Goodfoot. Last year's event at Olympic Mills was a huge success and great party. There will be nearly 2,000 pieces, all of which are $50 and cash/carry. At that price, the pieces go quickly. Get there early if you want to to see the full show.

The Blazers flew to Philadelphia (the city that booed Santa) shortly after their loss to the Nets last night, giving them a full day to reflect on their lackluster performance in New Jersey.

Elton Brand has somehow located a 2nd wind, and is playing like the Elton Brand of 2006, currently averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds per game. Even though Brand is scoring and rebounding well, I expect LaMarcus' athleticism to allow him to get whatever he wants tonight.

Andre Iguoudala, who was team USA's defensive specialist over the summer, will match up against Brandon Roy tonight. It will be interesting to see how Roy does against a shutdown defender Read the rest of this entry »

Portland Holiday Ale FestivalHoliday Ale Festival Picks:

The Holiday Ale Festival is a perennial favorite of beer geeks for its wild selection of experimental and big beers with emphasis on brews not available anywhere else. This year is no different with a surprising amount of sours, lots of barrel-aged beers and only few hop bombs.

Here are the brews that stood out the most to me of the 13 we sampled ahead of time.

1. Lompoc Franc’ly Brewdolph – I wasnt expecting to like this Belgian Red when I first heard and smelled it. I was expecting something overly sweet and fruity but this beer is supremely balanced between fruity esters, rich toasty caramel malts, spicy hops and subtle oak and wine characters from aging in Cabernet barrels. I recommend letting it warm up a bit to really get the range of its complexities.

2. Cascade Sang Noir - Many are probably already familiar with this sour belgian red blend from Cascade but this is a brand new 2010 blend and its just my kind of sour beer. Very sour beer! Read the rest of this entry »

Portland Timbers Tuesday: Timbers Go Moneyball In Expansion Draft

Portland Timbers Tuesday: Timbers Go Moneyball In Expansion Draft

The Portland Timbers had a whirlwind MLS Expansion draft last week, making a number of moves that left observers somewhat flummoxed. Trading away the No. 1 overall pick Dax McCarty? Drafting two players — Robbie Findley and Jonathan Bornstein — who aren't likely to play in the USA next season? What gives?

Having no real opinion of Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson and coach John Spencer entering the draft, I left impressed with their long-term vision and foundational strategy. Building a professional sports roster from scratch is way more difficult than it might appear at first glance. Unless you're blessed with an ownership group to whom money isn't an object, you're generally forced down one of two paths: maximize value and accumulate assets, or swing for the fences on aging household names.

Until the opening day roster is finalized, we won't know for sure what role chasing name players will play in Portland's strategy, but early indications are that Wilkinson and Spencer are proceeding along the asset maximization path very thoughtfully. When you're going from nothing to top flight Read the rest of this entry »

The polar bear — a charismatic icon in the struggle against climate change — faces a precarious future along with other ice-dependent species as its Arctic habitat rapidly continues to melt away.
