From our partners at Saturday Market:
Custom FleeceOctober is upon us and that means Halloween is just around the corner. Bring the kids by the Market for Kid's Corner where the little ones can craft their very own trick-or-treating bag; then come back and take it for a test drive on October 31. At noon on Halloween, the market will host a Costume Parade, followed by three hours of trick-or-treating through vendor booths. While you are there, be sure to check out all the things the vendors have on hand to keep you warm and cozy as the temperature begins to dip into a much more reliably chilly zone.

For example, the folks over at Antic (anticink.com) understand that basics like t-shirts and hoodies don't have to be basic. Founded by local artist Isaac Bauman, Antic has a rainbow of comfortable sweatshirts emblazoned with bold designs that range from thought-provoking to funny to downright beautiful.

Or, if the gloomy, grey weather is getting you down, head over to Lolly-Tots (lolly-tots.com) and just try not to smile. Mad hatter Mary Kelly makes fun, furry, and whimsical headgear designed to not only keep your head warm, but your spirits high. After all, it's hard to have a bad day when you're wearing a panda on your head.

Another stop for the creatively-minded warmth seeker is Read the rest of this entry »

Portland Timbers Tuesday: Awards, Drafts And Demands

By Ben Golliver

After the bright lights and excitement of last week's announcement of four player signings, the Portland Timbers offseason has slowed down a bit, at least for the time being. Nevertheless there is some award talk, a date to circle on your calendar and some shocking demands from a local player worth taking a look at this week.

First things first: The USSF Division 2 handed out its "Best XI", soccer's version of an end-of-the-season all-league team. Two Timbers made the list. Midfielder Ryan Pore, who led Portland in scoring on the season, was the only 2010 Timber so honored. But Attacker Eddie Johnson, who played for the Austin Aztex in 2010 and was signed to play for the Timbers in the MLS next season, also made the cut. It's often said that you build a quality soccer team from the back. The Timbers appear to be taking a different approach, locking down two productive attacking pieces early, which could make for an exciting season next year.

The next major date on the Timbers calendar is Nov. 24, when the club will have first pick in this year's Major League Soccer expansion draft. An expansion draft forces each current MLS club to determine which of its players are essential and which are non-essential. Each team can protect 11 of its players, the rest are open for selection by both the Timbers and the Vancouver Whitecaps, who are also joining the MLS as an expansion team next year. While an expansion draft won't net you any stars, it's an important way to build out your roster depth. The draft is set to go 10 rounds, so the team will add 10 new players after the night is over.

Finally, the most shocking news of the week Read the rest of this entry »

Tuesday: Portland Halloween Horror Double Feature Film Fest @ Hollywood Theater | House By The Cemetery & Zombie

Portland's been on a Halloween binge this whole month, and this week where things get serious. If you can't make it until the weekend, Grindhouse Film has you covered with a double feature of horror at Hollywood Theater tomorrow night.

Related Portland Halloween Events & Info:

From Press Release:
Get out your barf bag! On Tuesday October 26th at the Hollywood Theatre, The Grindhouse Film Festival presents a LUCIO FULCI DOUBLE FEATURE!  35mm prints of splatter-master Lucio Fulci's legendary gutmunchers HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY (at 7:30) and the audience favorite ZOMBIE (at 9:30).  Ultra-violent 70's horror trailers before each movie.  Advance tickets are on the website: grindhousefilmfest.com

HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY (1981) A terrifying tale of gore and sleaze!  A professor moves his wife and creepy ass son into an old cursed house.  It doesn't take long before blood starts oozing from the walls and the son befriends the ghost of a little girl warning them to leave.  The real horror though is the living, rotting corpse hiding in the basement, who needs to kill to survive.  This is Lucio Fulci at his finest, meaning we'll see decapitations, impalements, maggots, and the longest rabid bat attack in cinema history, all immersed in Fulci's masterful atmosphere of terror.  Not to be missed!

ZOMBIE (1979) Fulci's gutmunching masterpiece about a doctor on a remote island whose experiments have caused the dead to return to life.  A group of Americans visit the island in search of the doctor, and are drawn into a ferocious battle with the flesh eating walking dead.  Backed by Fabio Frizzi's synthesized soundtrack, zombies rise from the grave, humans are ruthlessly attacked, a zombie fights a shark, and all gory hell breaks loose!  “We are going to EAT YOU!”
