Timbers Tuesday: The 2010 Season Ends For The Portland Timbers, Despite A Win

There are 1,000 ways to lose a soccer match, many of them cruel, but when the Portland Timbers were bounced from the USSF Division 2 playoffs by the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday at Merlo Field, it was uniquely painful because the Timbers lost, even though they won.

The eventual agony stemmed from a sharp momentum swing that accompanied Timbers midfielder James Marcellin's neat header to put Portland up 1-0. The goal brought Portland halfway to salvaging their season, as they entered Sunday night's game, the second half of a home-and-home playoff series, trailing 2-0 on aggregate goals. After Marcellin redirected the cross from Ian Joy, leaving Vancouver goaltender Jay Nolly hopeless and sending the Merlo Field crowd into a tizzy, the Timbers had 40 minutes to tack on another goal to force extra time and, perhaps, a penalty shootout.
