Timbers Aim To Keep Rolling Thursday Night Against Austin

The last time the Portland Timbers were in town, they looked to build off some positive off-the-pitch momentum. Just a few weeks (and two wins and a draw in three matches) later: mission accomplished.

Indeed, the addition of new head coach John Spencer (pictured) is starting to look like a turning point for the season. Portland looks to remain unbeaten since Spencer's hiring as they host the Austin Aztex tonight at PGE Park.

Portland's Last Thursday on Alberta celebration is once again here. Friend of the Pipeline, Brian Connolly, will have his “Things Out Of Stuff” at BillyGoat Vintage on NE 24th. It is also their one year anniversary celebration, so sure to be a good place to check out.

I took this picture a few months ago at Crema Cafe in SE Portland. The heads & haands are salt & pepper shakers. Not quite sure what the legs are for (take shots?), but you can probably figure it out on his site here. You might want to get there early as Brian's great items should go quickly.

Stumptown Staycation

It has become increasingly popular across our great United States for the theme "Staycation" to ring out loudly. What better way to experience Portland then purposely vacationing as a tourist. We went down to Portland Saturday Market for inspiration and compiled 5 easy steps to help you become a tourist in your own hometown.

What's the best thing about being a hometown tourist? It's so easy to do.  Get away without going away! Planning to get away can be a challenge these days, with both time and money at a premium for many would-be travelers. Fortunately, there is a way to satisfy wanderlust that is easy on both.  Discover what others come to see in your hometown. Explore the affordable, eclectic and unsurpassed mix of dining, shopping, history, art and nature that is Portland — on your own or with your family.

Ask someone about the visitor attractions in their hometown and they might well tell you that they have never visited that place. It seems many of us take the place we grew up in for granted. Why the rush to visit somewhere else? We have the rest of our lives to call in and pay a visit. In a worldwide global recession and with our carbon footprints becoming ever more noticeable, it makes sense to check out what your local environs have to offer.

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT: THE RADIANT CHILD
U.S. 2010
Director: TAMRA DAVIS

In his short career, Jean-Michel Basquiat was a phenomenon. From his early, cryptic street art to his meteoric rise to prominence in the New York art world, Basquiat exhibited genius. He infused his work with an intentional childishness that contrasted sharply with his catalog of intellectual, anatomical, sociopolitical, historical, and graphic influences.

By the time of his premature death in the 1980s he was no less than the prince of the post-pop scene. Combining never-before-seen interview footage with commentary from friends and contemporary art world luminaries, Davis offers a compelling introduction to a singularly driven creative personality, an artist who could paint masterpieces in an hour (earning him Andy Warhol's extreme jealousy) and Read the rest of this entry »

Kanaval PortlandPortlanders Invited To ‘Raise The Roof' With A Rockin' Carnival-Style Party

Kanaval Portland! is coming to town. Eight months after earthquakes devastated Haiti, more than 1 million children remain orphaned or displaced. Kanaval Portland! is the brainchild of Portland attorney Bill Pierznik who adopted a son from Haiti and is now tirelessly working to raise funds for Haitian orphanages through Mangrove Fund.

The event is inspired by Kanaval Haiti, the biggest festival of the year that celebrates music, dancing and the country's rich African and Creole heritage. It's also one heck of a party!

"This isn't your typical, stuffy fundraiser. The cause is also near to my heart as an adoptive parent," says Pierznik.
