The 2010 Portland Adult Soap Box Derby is this Saturday at Mount Tabor Park. It is a huge event that everyone should check out at least once. There is also an after-party at Tonic Lounge where prizes will be rewarded. You are likely to see a few more crashes this Saturday and NW Sports Guy explains why…

From NW Sports Guy (more videos & pictures on his site here):

In addition to poor construction, the vehicles most likely to crash have 1) poorly secured bicycle wheels 2) a high center of gravity and 3) high occupancy. Add in alcohol, a steep down grade and spectators throwing water balloons, and you get the perfect storm for destruction. In the above video, you can hear a water balloon impact against the soap box car, causing it to swerve and lose control. The spectator in the video wound up with a broken nose and was taken to the hospital. Good times had by all.

Friday: Poor Man's Whiskey And Fruition @ Mt. Tabor Theater

Poor Man's Whiskey and Fruition
August 13 at 9:00pm
Mt. Tabor Theater
4811 Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard Portland

Poor Man's Whiskey's “High-Octane Hootenanny” will certainly delight those interested in a foot-stompin good time. Poor Man's Whiskey has evolved into a ragged, spontaneous beast pulling from equally deep wells of story-telling originals, expertly crafted covers and zany on-stage shenanigans. The Bay Area's outlaw music bards bring a reputation for high-energy live shows and an incomparable fusion of folk, punk, rock, and disco to stages and festivals nationwide.

Local bluegrass dogooders Fruition may just be the next bluegrass band to hit the big time…well as big-time as bluegrass can be. They've got the chops, a fantastic record and a growing base of supporters. Here's what Nat Keefe of Hot Buttered Rum has to say, “I've seen Fruition play a few times this year and it's always been stellar. This soul/blues string band from Portland, OR are the biggest rock stars I've seen with acoustic instruments.” —Nat Keefe, Hot Buttered Rum

Cost: Tickets are $10 at the door.

Portland Timbers Take Recent Triumphs Into Wednesday Night Match Against Minnesota Stars

The recent results — loss, draw, loss — have been less-than-stellar for the Portland Timbers, and yet the organization's karma reached a peak this week thanks to a whirlwind 72 hours that saw a history-making developmental team and the acquisition of a new face of the franchise.

On Saturday, the Timbers U-23 team completed an unprecedented undefeated and untied season, capping a ridiculous 20-0-0 record with a 4-1 victory over the Thunder Bay Chill in the Premier Development League Championship.  Then, on Wednesday, the team took a milestone step towards its future by announcing the hiring of head coach John Spencer, the man who will captain the ship during the team's maiden Major League Soccer voyage. Much like the club, Spencer is bringing a rich history with the game to a new place next year: Having played at the highest levels of English and Scottish soccer and been a long-time assistant coach with the Houston Dynamo, Spencer will be making his professional head coaching debut with the Timbers in 2011.

Although great for morale, a hotshot new coach and some serious youth team hardware might not be as important to the Timbers as their return to PGE Park after a four game road trip, and the week off they've enjoyed since their last match, a 1-0 road loss to Rochester.  Tonight they play host to the Minnesota Stars, a team they beat 2-0 on the road back in June.  With any luck — and perhaps a little help from recent karma — Portland will take a serious run at dealing Minnesota its first loss since July 4th.

Event information: Minnesota Stars @ Portland Timbers | PGE Park | Kickoff @ 7PM | Tickets are available on Ticketmaster or at the box office.
